Alex Smith was 20-4 before his injury as a starter and won a playoff game for the 49ers for the first time in 10 years and came within minutes of helping them get to the Super Bowl. I like Kaepernick, but I think until there's a reason to bench Alex (who was playing well before his concussion), they shouldn't be doing this.

How much of that is Harbaugh though? It's not like Alex Smith has been this solid force in the league since he was drafted...his first three years in the league he was largely viewed as a bust. Smith played over his head versus the Saints, that game doesn't define him as a player.

Look, I think the 49ers were going to be in a good situation no matter how they handled this. Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick give them a good chance to win, mostly because they have an elite defense. You can argue for both guys if we're being honest, but I like that Harbaugh isn't afraid to take a risk to win a championship. I think it's something he's probably wanted to happen for awhile, I could see him being quite proud of how Colin Kaepernick has developed since he's been a 49er. That's the guy he drafted, he's invested in.

It's a bold call, and I think it pays off.

as for the move i dont think it makes a ton of sense but at the same time it really may not matter. The niners were doing just fine with Smith and it is extremely unusual to lose your job when you are 6-2. Kaepernick doesnt strike me as the next big thing anyways and he is going to have to fall right into the same system Smith has been winning under...run the ball and play great defense.. it may not matter who plays qb for them as long as they dont turn the ball over and the rest of the guys just continue to do what they have been doing for the last 2 years. I view this move at best as a lateral move with a decent chance of backfiring

Like every QB, Kapernick will inevitably have a bad game. Then this call would be one he should never have made.

Smith is Harbuagh's guy as much as C.K. If he wasn't, they wouldn't have brought him back.

I stand by what I said at that time but obviously I'm happy with the decision now. Kaep still has work to do against much tougher defenses than Green Bay's.
