Jim Harbaugh is awesome, he does what he wants. I think this is the right decision, and not every coach would have the balls to be firm with this.

Ya because being 6-2-1 is terrible. And having a perfect passer ratings in the game you got hurt in is terrible. Lets stop acting like Alex Smith is a bad QB he has never been a bad QB he just never had a good team/coach. The guy might not have 3000 yard passing but that isnt his fault SF is a running team. The guy is leading the league in Completion %, 4th in QBR and is 3rd in YPA

I'm actually not a fan of this move. Alex was doing just fine. Let him keep doing what he's been doing.

They traded up to get him in the draft and he dominated one of the best defenses in the league on prime time television. It's not like Alex Smith is Aaron Rodgers, he's a middle of the road QB who they clearly aren't married to. I mean, they didn't extend him until they were SURE they couldn't get Peyton Manning, they drafted a QB high in the draft...when they tried out Randy Moss they didn't even have Smith throw it to him because he can't throw it that far.

I'm sure they've been waiting to hand the keys to the car over to Kaepernick for awhile now, and this finally gave them a legit out to do so.

Kaep gives them an edge that Alex Smith doesn't (which is accentuated by their elite defense), he can win them a game. I agree Alex Smith is less likely to lose them a game, but when it's a close race between two quarterbacks, I'd rather go with the guy who can win me the game. Joe Webb over Christian Ponder, Kaepernick over Smith, Locker over Hasselbeck, Tebow over Sanchez. From my observation, those types of guys give you a better chance to win a ball game even if you have to deal with some bumps in the road.

People act like they can't make the move back.

49ers were in it for Peyton for a reason. They didn't believe in Alex Smith and this will give Kaepernick rest of season and they can switch back at anytime.

i don't see any problem with this. kaepernick looked pretty good and looks like he could be the qb of the future for the team.

worst case, he doesn't do well, this gives smith a little more time to get 100%, and then smith takes back over as the starter. best case, he's better than smith and the team does further. i'm not really seeing any downside.

Ok I get the 1st 2 paragraphs, but I disagree with the third. The 49ers aren't some rebuilding/hopeless team that's trying to develop their QB during a season. They're the NFC West leader. They have a lot to lose by switching their leader.

Those teams you mentioned have a legit reason to play their younger QB.

Don't understand why you'd tank Alex Smith who has played well consistently over the last two years and even into the playoffs for a guy who played well a couple games. It's not like Alex Smith is old or anything, so I'm not sold on 'Kap could be the future arguments'. I think you stick with Alex and sell high on Kaepernick in the offseason before he has any chance to his trade value.
