If Jason Smith were Asian or European...
...would he be a top 5 pick in this draft?

ironic thing is I've seen Yi and some of the european prospects actually play
I've never seen Jason Smith play (Colorado State never on TV)

The only guy I really see him pushing out of the top 5 would be a guy like Yi

Hard to say, Splitter is probably projected lower than you'd think, same for Rudy. How about if Smith had dominated at UNC, he's bigger faster and stronger than Brandan Wright with a ton more range, would he be thought of as favorably as Wright. Playing at CSU doesnt help the cause i'm sure.

Wasn't it Jason Kapono who said if he grew a beard and changed his name to Vladimir Kaponovich, that he would have been a lottery pick.

Re: If Jason Smith were Asian or European...
I don't know if that one example is true, but this is pretty much the reason why Stern was so gung ho to get an age restriction. It was to protect the NBA GM's from themselves. They are obsessed with finding the guy noone else found and hitting a grand slam instead of taking the safe pick that only helps you a little or not at all later in the draft.
There is a strange logic to it once you get past a certain point in the draft. At the top of the draft there are going to be so many guys that a blind man could pick in one order or another. Then at some point you look around and all you see are guys who have pretty much proven that they aren't likely to make a huge impact in the NBA.The team isn't paying you to do what any ******* fan could do so you decide hey...I'll bet my *** and let it ride.Everyone of those guys are convinced that they know more than anyone else when in truth you are evaluating players based on what they've done against the Chinese Basketball Association or some low level club team in Europe. There isn't that great a percentage in swinging for the fences, but hey someone has to find that guy noone else did.

That's a stupid comparison. Smith and Wright are pretty comparable statistically, but Smith was playing an awful schedule. He's not as talented as someone like Brandan Wright, and a stupid NBA team thinking so doesn't change that.
