Mayo seems to be a lot like Kobe
http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/draft...*chMayo-080523
some select quotes below:
His confidence is interpreted as arrogance. When he shoots the ball, he's selfish. When he passes it, he's criticized for not shooting it. When he wins, he's showboating. When he loses, the fingers collectively point his way.
"At 8 a.m., Mayo is the first person in the gym, working on his jump shot before the rest of the pre-draft participants arrive. He's the first one in the gym most mornings. According to those around him, it's always that way.
In group workouts, Mayo dominates … not with his words or body language, but with his play. The thousands of hours of jumpers have translated into a shot that Mayo can make anywhere on the floor.
He can take his man off the dribble. He can finish at the rim. In a 3-on-3 game on Thursday, he made pinpoint pass after pinpoint pass. When Gonzaga's Jeremy Pargo tried to get physical on offense, Mayo got in his grill and shut him down.
As he prepares for the draft and his rookie season, his day in the gym is long and draining:
By 10 a.m., he's in an intense weightlifting and core workout. Every 30 seconds, there's another drill.
At 11 a.m., he's back on the court with trainer Mike Procopio, working on his 3-point shot.
His mother sits patiently on the side, watching his every move. She's determined to protect her son after allegations that O.J. took money from Rodney Guillory, a former Mayo confidant and runner connected with Bill Duffy Associates Sports Management. Mayo declined to answer additional questions about the allegations and relationship with Duffy.
After a 30-minute lunch, Mayo's back in the gym going through the same routine.
At 4 p.m., he's still sinking jumpers in a quiet corner of the gym.
He's been at this every day. In many ways, it's been his life since the seventh grade -- preparing for something that everyone says he should be.
"I love basketball," he says when I ask why he works like this. "Basketball is my life."

Just because OJ Mayo comes off as an ******* doesnt make him Kobe. Kobe is a one of a kind *******. Hes turned being a jerk into some sort of crazy supernatural basketball power. Jordan had a similar power, I doubt OJ Mayos the next great *******. He'll just be an *******.

What exactly makes you think that ? Everything this season has been just the opposite including recent interviews and articles. He will be nowhere near as good as Kobe, but he will be a good player.

Oh I think he'll be a quality player, but never someone you can compare to Kobe.

Re: Mayo seems to be a lot like Kobe
I'm not saying he is similar in terms of overall potential, he has a lower ceiling.
It's just personality wise and his obsession with bball that makes him similar IMO.

read this article about Kobe (plastic man posted it originally in Lakers forum) and then look over the Mayo article. Again, this has nothing to do with playing style or physical builds

Re: Mayo seems to be a lot like Kobe
He won't be as good as Kobe because he isn't as gifted physically. However, this guy has star power written all over him. I look at it like this: He has better odds to become a star or a complete failure. I don't see any in-between with him.

Re: Mayo seems to be a lot like Kobe
I agree HKF. I dont see him being mediocre...hes either gonna be a star or hes gonna be all talk, no action.
I think itll be the former, but we will see.

I kind of agree, but I see it as he'll either be the NEXT BIG THING, or he'll be Deshawn Stevenson. There's just no way that OJ Mayo is going to be a bust like Gerald Green.

Re: Mayo seems to be a lot like Kobe
I see a lot of star potential in OJ Mayo. He could even have a quiet, average season and then come on crazy the next.

Re: Mayo seems to be a lot like Kobe
Depending on the situation he's drafted in, I could see a 13/4/4 season from him, then a Rudy Gay like explosion the next.
