All you have to do to break the assist record is..
Have a 12 year career, never miss a game, and average 16 assists per game for the duration.
Is it the most unbreakable *career total* record in sports?

John Stockton has almost 16,000 career assists. He is likely indirectly responsible for more points than any player in the history of the league.

it's likely to stand for a long time, seeing as how assists have gone waaaaay down.
in fact, it may never be broken.
total rebounds, too.

Would it be infeasible for Shaun Livingston, say between the ages of 20 and 38, to reach? He or Telfair would probably be the guys with any skerrick of hope...

The hopes of guys like Telfair and Livingston rest on their longevity, obviously, but even if they're playing for 18 seasons you're still looking at never missing any time due to injury and averaging 11 assists a game. That seems almost impossible to me, especially considering that they're not going to be putting up those kind of assist numbers for at least a few years.

Telfair has no hope.
Of current guys, I'd say Tony Parker has a somewhat reasonable shot, sorta. He's really young, and he's going to be passing it to Duncan a lot, who doesn't miss often, for at least 5 more years, minimum, and they might get someone else after that. I don't think he's a good enough, or smart enough, | |
