KG can hit the 20 foot jumper, or the occasional 3 pointer, but just because he CAN hit it doesn't mean hes a good outside shooter. I'd say he is ok at best. Duncan I find is a bit better than KG from mid range, he can hit an outside shot with consistancy, but he almost never takes the 3 ball, so you can't really judge him there. Yao is pretty good as well from outside. From midrange, he is almost automatic, and his height allows him to shoot over a lot of ppl. But Dirk is the best outside shooting big. While guys like KG, Duncan and Yao can shoot ok from outside, Dirk is a better outside shooter than most guards are. His game 15-20 feet is probably the best in the NBA because of his ability to shoot over people in traffic, and his 3 point stroke is automatic if he's left open, or if you put a smaller defender on him.
Alright, I was all set to answer Drewbs about the KG/Duncan jumper issue, when I saw that statistical thesis by TylerDurden. Pretty much everything I planned to say was covered there, but I'll say it in a bit more basic language.

KG and Duncan both shoot about 50% from the field. Duncan spends more time inside than KG does, and in general one shoots a higher percentage inside than out. Therefore, if Duncan shoots a higher percentage of shots inside than out but KG still has the same overall FG%, he must be hitting more of the mid-range jumpers than Duncan.

Not nearly as statistically convincing as Mr. Durden, but I hope it makes sense to everybody...

How so? Dirk doesn't need to dominate the ball to be effective, he's perfectly capable of catching and shooting off of someone else's penetration. The knock on Marbury is his inability to do anything offensively without the ball in his hands all the time.

"Memac" is a SHOOTING guard, the prototypical job for SGs is to score. The prototypical job for PGs is to distribute the ball, create for others. Personally, i tend to dislike scoring PGs such as Marbury and Francis because a PG is the general of the team, the director of the orchestra that is basketball, and with him trying to pull And1 moves instead of pick and rolls, it usually tends to leave the entire offense stagnant with everyone else just watching. The ideal PG in my opinion is someone who is good at penetration, outside shooting, and above all, good court vision/good passing ability/good basketball IQ. Leave the one on one scoring moves to Hot Sauce. Of course this "ideal" PG only fits my ideal team, a team with a dominant big man surrounded by shooters. So say id Steve Francis decides to be my "ideal" type of PG next year, that may even be detrimental to the Magic since they don't have a dominant lowpost scorer and needs Francis to be a 1 on 1 player. But thats a whole other disccussion.

As for Irk, sure he doesn't have "D", but he is an OK rebounder and his playing style fits with his team(high scoring, run and gun). This is also not the ideal playing style i think is best for winning, but which do you prefer, no D run and gun, or 1 on 5 from a 6'2 point guard.

And Marbury does create for others. He dominates the ball no more than Francis does, but his assist numbers blow Francis's away. Why do you think this is, even when Marbury went to the Knicks who had a lot less healthy talent than the Rockets? Because he is one of the best points in the league thats why.
