Laimbeer, Malone, Rodman, Artest, Pippen, and a select few others were very physical players and defenders in their primes. Laimbeer was probably the worst "offender", just ahead of Malone.

Reggie Miller used to throw some cheap shots on defense too.

Most physical has to be Rod-man. Toughest is Barkley, even Shaq couldn't push him out of position.

from the 50's Vern Mikkelsen and several others would knock guys out if they drove the lane. Literally.
from the 60's Gus Johnson was only 6-5 or 6-6 but probably the strongest power forward of his time, and very physical.
from the 70's, John Brisker. Mostly played in ABA, but did play in NBA for a while and people were afraid for their lives. Only 6-4 but outmuscled lots of forwards. Paul Silas was physical too, played Rodman-style defense. Maurice Lucas was one mean player.
from the 80's Darrel Dawkins. He was one of the strongest guys in the league, he used to swing his elbows like crazy to clear space. They made it a tech because of him. Laimbeer was crazy physical too.
from the 90's Rodman, Oakly, A Mason, Karl Malone
from the 00's, Ben Wallace, Karl Malone

I'd say Rodman/Malone and Barkley are top candidates. Also, this might sound weird but how about Iverson. The dude gets banged around every match for 40 minutes for what? 8 years?

Very good list. Another guy in the 1960s was Al Attles, a guard who was legendary for his boxing ability. Bob Rule was a Mahorn-like center who used to really get under Jabbar's skin.
In the 1970s, Calvin Murphy was the most feared guy in the league despite being the smallest. Dave Cowens was a maniac, an undersized center who would scratch and claw for any loose ball he could get. And Chicago had the most physical backcourt, with Jerry Sloan and Norm Van Lier. If you think Sloan is tough as a coach, you should have seen him as a player!
Special mention to the ABA's Cincy Powell and Warren Jabali, who played forward at 6'2" and scared the heck out of everyone.
