If you're arguing with someone saying that the Bobcats will win 60 games next season, would you refuse to make a bet with that person that they wouldn't win 60 games, just because (if for some reason) Vegas had it set at 65? Vegas is irrelevant.

^^^What he said.
Thank you for elaborating on my point.

Do you have a link to the over/under odds? I'd like to look at them.

Getting interested? How bout some 4 way action. Johnny Mac? Arclite? RP? Oh wait, he wants 2-1 odds....
Although i'm sure you guys are more sensible than to say Rockets will definitely win less than last year. Of course there's the chance. There's also a chance Tim Duncan gets a career ending pinky injury and Spurs win 5 games. I wouldn't put my money on it, or actually say it seriously though.

I guess some people just don't take themselves so seriously that they feel the need to unnecessarily risk money to prove themselves to some guy they don't even know on a chat board.

Not wanting to make a bet over a message board is different from being willing to bet, but wanting 50 wins after stating arguing with someone that they wont win more than 45. Theres a big difference there.

What would the point of a casual bet be if they're all going to be based on Vegas odds? Everybody would just go bet online or in a sports bar or something.
The whole point of a bet between individuals is that they make the odds and conditions themselves. In this case, RP stated Rockets will win less than 45 games, which is why I brought up betting to begin with. Bring Vegas odds in to cop out doesn't sit well with me.

So every time I make a prediction, I better be willing to make a monetary bet over a message board with a guy who has been here a month, or I'm just a *****?

Do you really need me to answer that question? Of course I'd take the Vegas bet, instead of the worse bet with a guy on a message board!
I'm not much of a betting person. I don't make casual bets left and right. I only make bets when I'm super-confident in something. As a matter of fact, when I recently put some money down on the Rockets not winning 50, it was only the second time in my life that I made a wager on a sporting event. I have lots of opinions, but I'm aware that when you gamble, the odds are stacked against you. The few times when I do make a bet, I always shop around for the best odds I can find. I'm not stupid enough to make a bet every time I have an opinion. I'm definitely not stupid enough to make a bet when I can get better odds elsewhere. And I DEFINITELY have enough common sense to make a bet with a guy on a message board, just to prove to how macho I am to a bunch of people I'll never meet, when I could get better odds elsewhere, and when I have no guarantee that the guy is even going to be good for his money! That doesn't mean I don't believe what I'm saying, it just means I'm not an idiot.
This is probably about the tenth time that a Rockets fan has hijacked a thread and started personally attacking me, just because I posted a negative opinion about the Rockets team, or one of its players. When I asked him to take it to PM, he did not do so. Now he's calling me a ***** who's running away with my tail between my legs. Some of these Rockets fans are starting to annoy me, so I think I'm going to follow a new policy when I post on basketballboards.net. If people are not interested in having an intelligent conversation, and they're only interested in personally attacking me, I'm just not going to resopnd. In the meantime, I'd appreciate it if a moderator would close this thread.

Absolutely not. But he wanted to, and that was up to him. Except, he wanted to change the terms.
It would be alot simpler just to say, "I don't think Houston will win 45 games, but i'm not confident enough to put money on it."
Rather than bring up some Vegas odds to back out. If i wanted to bet with Vegas odds, i'd be talking to my bookie, not some poster i hardly know.

10 Rocket fan? Just because you had a negative opinion?
If i posted somewhere that the Spurs will barely make the playoffs, or that Detroit isn't top 5 in their conference, i bet 10 Spurs fans or 10 Detroit fans will be on my *** as well. In fact they wouldn't even bother arguing with me, they'd just call me a troll.
At least I'm just calling you a *****, not a ***** troll.

You still dont see the difference. If you're not willing to bet, then thats cool. Thats not what was going on (at first).
If I said Bulls will win 45 games next season, you said no way they'll win that many and asked to bet, and I said okay I'll bet but you have to lower your amount of games they win to 30. What would you say? You'd probably say something like "you said 45, not 30." So I'm willing to bet, but only if we discuss different terms than we were arguing.
Now if you asked to bet, and I said, nah I'm not a betting person and I dont trust people over a message board, then thats different. Thats not what I saw happening.

I see the difference, but he's substantiating not taking the bet for them to win less than 45 games with a legit reason, he's not just plucking some unreasonable number out of the sky like that scenario. I didn't want to get involved anyway, I just thought it was funny that he was being called out for not wanting to take a bet over a message board with some guy he doesn't know when he could get better odds elsewhere.
