I don't agree that this team is bad on defense. They have lapses but overall they are much better than last years team on that end. How else could we stay in the game last night with our ugly offense?
We do miss Nash quite a bit but he was a huge hole on the defensive end. Dampier is not putting up the numbers that I expect but I am not ready to call him a failure, not even close. Even as mediocre as he has been he still has a big affect on the game.
Maybe its time to look at Jason Kidd.
Sorry none of this has anything to do with the top 5 performers so far which is a topic I could not possibly care less about. Whether Dirk is 2nd, 5th or 8th is insignificant. I only care about wins.

I am glad on you are on this with me.
NO, I don't think Mavs has bad defense 'cause they clearly showed great defense against the T-Wolves who was 3rd in rebounding.
I brought up that Mavs' defense was horrible last night because Damp wasn't on the court! That's my point.
Mavs. has all the talents they need. 3 PGs; 3 Centers; Shooters (Dirk and Finely); Defense players Dampier, Josh Howard, Jason Terry; draw-foul-guys (Dirk and Stackhouse)..
When you look at how many good players they have, you will realize Nelson is CLEARLY doing something wrong. Mavs game has NO FLOW. The only reason they have the winning right now is because of Dirk.
We do have the defense but he doesn't use it. Somewhat he thinks that "unique" small-line is going to make a lot of mismatches and gonna win the game for Mavs. Offensively, Mavs was alright but defensively, Mavs sucked last night. Sonics is on fire right now and you can't really out-score them. So what do you do? SECURE your freaking basket. Grab the rebounds and have more inside precense. Dampier?? I thought that's why they got him and gave up Nash?
Trust me on this. This game will reflect Mavs' playoff outcome. Mark my words. Nelson may use Dampier occassionally but when the game gets tight, he'll stick with his small men.
The biggest problem with Nelson is that he keeps changing his lineup. Nobody knows what the their role is. This is critically bad. Stick with a few men and let them figure out how to play rather than having Nelson figure it out for them. The new players have to grow on their own and you can't just ask them to contribute much with that constantly changing lineup. If it means Mavs is going to lose a few games, let them lose. Let them fire up damn it.
With Nash being there, at least they know they are not going to turn the ball over and the PG position is well secured.
I suspect part of the reason Nelson doesn't use Dampier that much is that he is not a good outside shooter. Nelson doesn't like guys that are not good at taking long-range shots. WTF? Dampier may struggle a little bit now but you have to let him play to get used to the system. It's better to lose now than losing in the playoffs (if they can get in of course).
