Shaq finally getting fair treatment from refs
I think this is the first year where Shaq has actually been officiated reasonably fairly.
he's averaging the fewest minutes of his NBA career, and yet is getting called for more personal fouls than at any time since his rookie season. he's at nearly 4 fouls a game in just 28 minutes.
refs are simply calling the game a little more fairly because he's no longer a top 5 NBA player. he's not getting away with all the dislodging he used to do.
you could argue that some of the fouls he's now getting called for are because he's slowed down, but he wasn't exactly a speed demon in his last year in LA when he played 37 mpg and only averaged 3.4 fouls a night.

Re: Shaq finally getting fair treatment from refs
I think the speed/quickness argument here works, though. Shaq was still plenty quick enough and athletic enough in his later years in LA to the point where getting 3-4 fouls per game in 37+ minutes was just right. But right now, he's far slower and far less athletic, so much so that it's quite obvious he can't get away with dislodging because his intent isn't to move into and around his man, but simply right into his man and nothing more.

hes still way out of shape. he can still power people but his stamina has really gone to Do not mask your cursing.. he doesnt really demand the ball as much as he used to. post positioning has been erratic for him.

Re: Shaq finally getting fair treatment from refs
u want him be faster? but a doughnut on a string attach to a stick on his back
u want him to be more agile? but bigger and bigger serving of fries on each side line of the court
im glad to see Snack is no longer be allowed do just back his junk in the trunk all the way into the paint, and in a mighty display of athleticism, use his 7'2 body to reach up to the rim, and have his 600lb body crashing down on all the physical specimens he "dominated"

Re: Shaq finally getting fair treatment from refs
Everything Shaq does is big. He is a big man. He is the big aristotle. He has a big mouth. Big ego.
So it's only right that this year really sets off the big decline.

Re: Shaq finally getting fair treatment from refs
There's a reason Buss traded him. Shaq can still score, but he can't stay in shape, and his lack of effort in conditioning will hurt him more as he grows older.

I know plenty of old timers and HOFer's that claimed defense in the late 90's and early 2000's weren't as good as the 80's. Wilt once said he'd average 70 ppg in the modern-day NBA because defenses were so much worse. Pippen once said KG was a stats guy who disappears down the stretch of games. Bill Walton once said Rasho was a better interior defender than Tim Duncan because Tim Duncan was on the bench at the time. Barkley once said Argentina was located north of the Indian ocean.

Intangibles
in*tan*gi*bles (greek meaning: plays hard every night) - 1. word used to describe marginally talented and productive basketball players. 2. Last resort when explaining the "value" of said marginally talented and productive player. 3. Shane Battier
Love the Marc Jackson-Jeff Van Gundy combo...
"I've played with guys like Rodmonavic; good enough to keep both teams in the game."~ Jackson during gm 5 commenting as Rodmonavic scores at one end and gives up another layup.
