Mysteries of the NBA
1) Why in the hell did Utah draft Deron Williams instead of Chris Paul? Of course I didn't think Chris Paul would be this good in his rookie season, but it was common knowledge that he would be better than Deron. A lot of people were saying that Paul was the best player in the draft, at #4. Can you imagine a healthy Jazz lineup of
PG - Paul/Palacio
SG - Giricek/Brown/Harpring
SF - Kirilenko/Harpring
PF - Boozer/Humphries
C - Okur/Collins/Ostertag
That's a top 5 playoff team in the west at the very worst.
2) Why does Phoenix get no respect as a title contender? They're already doing great this year, with the addition of Diaw, Bell, Thomas, Jones, and House. And when Big Amare comes back they could be unstoppable. Basically they'll be like last years team except with better defense and a much deeper bench.
3) How come refs don't call travelling when players leap three feet forward landing right next to the hoop? I've seen Shaq do this all the time. Gets the ball, makes a few dribbles, then outright leaps across the lane and then whindes up underneath the basket for an easy dunk. How does a defender stop that?
4) Why does Quentin Richardson suck so much this year?
5) Why didn't Isiah Thomas let his two expiring contracts (Davis and Hardaway) run out at the end of the year? He has some great rookies, with a couple key pieces (Marbury and Curry). He could've started to rebuild the team and cut his losses with the horrible signings he had already done - but now the Knicks are still an infested, sloppy, and disorganized composition of overpaid castoffs.

Rick Adelman on Danny Fortson...
"Fortson, that's all he does - makes free throws and pushes."
Danny Fortson in reference to the anonymous Sonic who tattle taled to the Seattle-Times...
"I think somebody on this team might have girlish characteristics that need to be turned into a man. Because if we're going to win, we need warriors. We don't need girls. Girls are for the dance team."
Fortson also said "he wouldn't doubt it" if there were a gay player in the NBA but hopes he's not a Sonic.
"That would be a bad deal," Fortson said. "He might want to keep that one in the closet."

No Steve Nash.
Besides that, Q has always been overrated. He's simply not that good of a shooter. He's just a chucker who benefitted from playing in a system where he could hoist at will. Didn't he only shoot like 36% despite getting open looks from that system all the time? The dude shoots Antoine Walker-esque %'s for his career. He's a chuck, not a marksman.

"Kirilenko's eyes started to tear in the locker room as he talked in a shaky voice about his frustrations and inability to stop Pierce. He played just four minutes in the final quarter because of his inept defense, but his small consolation was that none of his teammates could do any better."
- Salt Lake Tribune
"I think he is at a point in his career where he gets very distracted by having a hand in his face."
- Portland forward Buck Williams on Larry Bird, before Larry Legend dropped 49 points, 14 rebounds, and 12 assists in a double overtime win

Re: Mysteries of the NBA
I believe Jazz picked Deron over Paul because Jerry was impressed with Deron's defense.
But who knows.
Maybe Jerry sees a Stockton-type player in Deron that everyone else doesn't.

because i cant see them beating the spurs or pistons come play off time. the only other team right now considered a contender is dallas, and i wanna see what dallas does in the playoffs before i judge them.

if the pick up the dribble as they leap, they havent technically jumped or taken a step with the ball in their hands

Re: Mysteries of the NBA
1) A lot of people thought that Deron Williams was the next Jason Kidd. It was not common knowledge that Paul would be better, especially after his tournament and ball-punching incident
2) Nobody knows if Amare will be 100% and they need to prove they can take out San Antonio.
3) That's a jump-stop, you can do it as long as you jump off the foot that is taking your second step. That is in no way traveling.
4) He's sucked since he stopped posting and rebounding and became a chucker.
5) Knicks rookies are very overrated. Toronto has a much better bunch. They're also a terrible organization.

Re: Mysteries of the NBA
You guys do know that the Suns beat the Spurs this year without Amare? (Spurs had Manu, Parker Duncan)
Last year the Suns beat the Spurs once in the regular season and that was without Manu, Duncan.

Well to be fair, that was after Stern changed the league policy on carrying weapons and KG could no longer distract Zach with his pump, uzi and couple M-16s.

They took Deron because of his size and his ability to sell himself to the franchise.
Quote:
. There was, though, some debate. In fact, O'Connor said the final call on Williams over Wake Forest University point Chris Paul did not come until about 4 p.m. Tuesday.
"It was not an easy decision," Sloan said afterward. "We just had to go with what we think is best for this franchise."
Sloan said Williams and Paul "play a little bit differently, see a little bit differently."
So what was the ultimate difference, then, in the mind of Jazz brass?
For starters, Williams might have sold himself a bit better.
"His interview that we had with him was very impressive as to how the game is played and what his approach to basketball (is)," Sloan said. "His overall knowledge of basketball was, I thought, very im | | |
