Comparison's Sake...
For comparison's sake lets put together a list of players currently in the league... and compare them to players that came into the league pre-1989.
For example, in my opinion...
Shawn Marion - James Worthy (seriously...)
Boris Diaw - Scottie Pippen (multifaceted games, Diaw DOES need more strength)
Darko Milicic - Sam Bowie (Bowie was a thin 7'+, 10+p/10+r/2.5+b player, and a bust, right?)
Vince Carter - Clyde Drexler (compare Vince age 27/28/29 to Clyde age 27/28/29)
Kobe Bryant - Michael Jordan (I'm talking pre-titles, ages 24-27)
Ben Wallace - Dennis Rodman (you had to see this one coming)
A few comparisons that don't make the cut because of the ages involved but I found interesting: Ron Artest and a young Glenn Robinson (remember: through four or five years he was considered the most successful of the Kidd/Hill/Robinson 1993 draft)... and the rookie years of Grant Hill and Lebron James.
-Chris.

Re: Comparison's Sake...
Rip Hamilton / Reggie Miller (it's been said often enough)
Amare Stoudemire / Shawn Kemp (similar monstrous athleticism, great finishers)
Elton Brand / Karl Malone (fast, efficient, great face-up game)
Allen Iverson / Tiny Archibald (lighting quick, built like point guards, prolific scorers)
Manu Ginobili / Pete Maravich (wild 2-guards that handle the ball and get to the hoop with their savvy and herky-jerky moves)
Ron Artest / Joe Dumars (great players on both ends of the court, but more known for their lockdown defense)
Shaquille O'Neal / Wilt Chamberlain (the biggest and baddest players of their time, completely unstoppable in their primes)
LeBron James / Oscar Robertson (excellent scorers, rebounders, playmakers; not known for clutch ability nor defense)
Dwyane Wade / Jerry West (West's career numbers: 27.0/5.8/6.7; Wade's current numbers: 27.3/5.9/6.8, enough said)

Ron Artest is a power player, compared to Dumars' perimeter scoring. And Wade and West???

Re: Comparison's Sake...
Yao Ming / Patrick Ewing - Solid 20/10 players who could shoot jumpers as well as score from the post, fearless and good defenders
Chris Webber / Charles Barkley - Do-it-all power forwards, who could pass well, score from the post, shoot from range and run the floor
Steve Nash / Kevin Johnson - Lightning-quick penetrators, automatic mid-range shots, excellent play-makers
Stephon Marbury / Isiah Thomas - Great scoring point guards who involved teammates off their own motion
Ben Gordon / Vinnie Johnson - Small guards who were electric scorers, who scored in bunches to turn games around

Re: Comparison's Sake...
Amare would be best compared to young Karl Malone, they are very similiar and their development so far is pretty much comparable. Malone added that great J to his game after he entered the league, similiar to Amare.

Re: Comparison's Sake...
Amare is much more athletic than Malone ever was.

Malone was an athletic freak before he put up that much muscle but yes Amare was more athletic but that isn't really what makes their games different.

I think that the Shawn Kemp comparison was apt. Don't be insulted by the fact that Kemp turned out to be a bum, in his prime Kemp was a nigh-unstoppable athletic freak.

Amare doesn't use sheer strength to beat his man, he uses a combo of strength, quickness, and explosiveness. Malone is a methodical player, beating a team with his post moves. Malone never was the midrange threat that Amare is, he was a low-post player.
