You're absolutely right. He needs to be humbled quickly. He's a great player, but he is overly cocky to a point where it is just disrespectful on many accounts.
He has a lot to learn, and if he were to go to the NBA today, he would receive a huge wake-up call. Hopefully college basketball teaches the kid a lesson, but does Tim Floyd really have the coaching ability to straighten this kid out? That is something that I'm not sure about.

Re: O.J Mayo
Looking at it again, it looks as though the play is more about enjoying the moment than humiliating the other team. Nonetheless, it certainly does humiliate the other team.
I understand the sentimentality of him going around giving everyone hugs near the end of the game, but it seems a little ridiculous for him to be having touchy-feely moments right after he threw the ball into the stands and got a technical foul.
He could've thrown the ball after the game was over, not while there was still time on the clock.
And I think it's clear why he doesn't have much discipline...look at his coach. The guy was one of the people to give him a hug right after the play was over.

He also had a small incident where he bumped into the ref, where he got suspended for it.
He's also a very cocky player one time he was playing a pick up game and Michael Jordan was there watching the game and he said "I got you"
Now this is where I am going with this, hes probably only going to play one year in College, do you think he's going to get in some trouble when he does play in the NBA, do you think he's going to start some fights and stuff? Or do you think that the College experience will mature him a bit?
The reason why I am writting this in the NBA forum is because the question is when he enters the NBA will he get in trouble or now?
|
He's what? 17? And everyone's been treating him like god since before he was even in high school. Big shocker he's got an attitude problem. When he gets to the NBA, if he's good enough and he works hard enough it won't be a problem. If he doesn't work hard enough, he'll have problems.

Amare falling to #9 was just ridiculous. The only *real* reason he dropped that far was because he attended multiple high schools (which doesn't necessarily mean anything), and because his parents weren't exactly there for him. Those were his "character issues" coming out of HS. He had also only played two actual years of HS basketball, but dominated in them to the point where it shouldn't have been an issue. A big man with that kind of absurd athleticism at such a young age should never fall below 5th. It still bugs me to this day. Oh well, the Suns are certainly reaping the rewards.
I've got nothing at all against cockiness (look at my favorite players), but the problem is that for every talented cocky player that becomes a Kobe, there's another that becomes an Isiah Rider. There's certainly no indication that O.J. will sink anywhere that low, but I think he should be a little wary.

I was pretty clear in stating that there's no reason to think that Mayo will sink "anywhere that low", and anyone can see I brought up Isiah Rider solely because he is on the absolute crap end of that particular spectrum (that of the cocky, young, talented player), with Kobe being on the absolute opposite end. So that it covers the whole spectrum and all possibilities, you see? Go Beex.

Re: O.J Mayo
I don't think a lot of people realize how good a PLAYER that Mayo is. He's definitely better than Chris Paul was in high school (someone above asked that question); really, he's a better high school player than Durant was and look what Durant did on the next level. He'll be playing as the best player in an open offense as the point guard next year, so he'll have an opportunity to put up big numbers.
BTW, he's better than Gordon and Rose, too. He's taken a backlash for being considered easily the best player in his class for years.

Haha, my bad. Hopefully we won't have to see it again, too, at least when it comes to directly comparing anybody to him.

Re: O.J Mayo
Jerryd Bayless is the most talented player in this class pro potential wise. He has Arenas like gifts.
