Nelson was smart enough to play to the strengths of his team, a quality of a smart coach.
If anyone can coach Dirk..well anyone can coach Jordan, or Shaq, or Russell, or Bird right? Well how come most of the people that have coached them are all considered greats? It's a chicken and egg situation. Great coaching and good teams go hand in hand. Nelson's strategy is a bit flawed, but the wins and strategies he devised still implemented to this day don't lie.

Nelson played to the strengths but he didn't create anything great. If you had Nash, Nowitzki, van Exel, Raef Lafrentz are you goign to play defense??? Nellie did what was obvious and it worked. Lets not give him too much credit for the Mavs success. Avery has taken them to the next level not Nellie. Nellie didn't lay the foundation either. This Mavs team is different and Avery's mentality and toughness has helped this team.
Steve Nash!!! THis is the same guy who makes right decision 99 out of 100 times. We are talking about STeve Nash 2 time MVP and the soon to be MVP Dirk. We are talking about two of the best players in the entire league. Those Mavs teams had some firepower when Nelson was there. Nash was my favorite player back then and I watched those MAvs teams like a hawk.
You know what I realized...Nellie sucked. Small ball! hahahaha Thats why they never went anywhere. If he would have been smart enough like D'Antoni to utilize Nash in the proper way the Mavs would have been much better. Instead he never utilized Nash or Nowitizki like he should have. Nellie blows.
I wish Nellie would have known what he was doing because Nash and Nowitzki might still be together. I loved those Mavs not because of Nellie but because of Nash before he became the man. I used to brag about his *** all the time back then.
It goes deeper then just saying "Lets put three guards in the game and try to create mismatches". Nellie is different but I wouldn't say he is quality. I think his originality makes people think he is a great coach. Nellie is a mirage...he looks good because his teams are scoring and look fluid. End result...just high scoring teams with no substance.
D'Antoni has built a team that is way more dynamic then Nellie could ever imagine.
He had Nash so lets not make excuses for him.

Re: Dallas, please don't murder Don Nelson tonight.
Proof Nellie is overhyped..
Look at Lakers Roster and Warriors Roster
Lakers Warriors
Kobe Baron Davis
Lamar Odom Al Harrington
Kwame Brown Jason Richardson
Smush Parker Stephen Jackson
Luke Walton Monta Ellis
My vote for the better roster goes to the Warriors.
Are the Warriors better then the Lakers??
Warriors have what many consider top 5 PG
maybe a top 5 SG...top 10 Jason Richardson
a top 10 SF...Harrington
Stephen Jackson
They have quality players.

In Milwaukee, IIRC, despite leading a good overall team, he never made it to the Conference Finals. In 11 years.
In Golden State, he refused to get a good enough post player to run with the Run TMC. To the point where Mullin was saying that they were blowing up the draft with 3 picks in the first round. Off course, we all know what his Warrior's tenure ended up like: trading The Rock for the scrub Billy Owens and alienating Chris Webber to the point he was traded.
In the Mavs, i find it funny that he had 8 years to work with them (and the greatest Team President around) and never once made the Conference Finals. enter a rookie coach and.. voilá! They made it to the Finals.
I know that don Nelson is a marketeable coach, because he brings a little shot in the arm to a franchise. But he is no winner.
Pat Riley went to the finals with 4 different teams (the eraly 80's Lakers', the late-80's Lakers, the Knicks and the Heat). In 22 years.
What has Don Nelson done in 27? Drafting Dirk Nowitszki?

Get with the times man. He might have not won a championship, but that doesnt make him a bad coach. So what if by some miracle he wins a championship in say the next 2 or 3 seasons, does that somehow make him great in your books. Dont know what you mean by he is no winner, when the guy has a history of improving terrible teams.

Did you take into account injuries, or the fact that the Warriors blew up their team midseason and had to get four or so players accustomed to their system whilst the league was in full grind.

I'm with GSW, meng!
I got Too Short bumpin right now! He's from Oakland beotch!
Now I understand GSW fans are just happy to have somebody that is good. I'll go with that because GSW need to get back to winning. I just don't want Nellie taking credit for the Mavs turnaround. Nellie can help a disaster and get them to the playoffs. Actually Nellie can do that all day long! But once the GSW team starts winning 50+ games a year you better get rid of Nellie.

So who should take credit for the Mavs turnaround? Obviously Cuban should get some, but besides Cuban who else is more deserving. Do you know how hard it is to change a losing culture?
