What is the point of offensive basket interference?
Seriously, it's a pointless rule. They don't have it in international play, and it makes no sense why it would be an unfair advantage for a team or a player. I think if you need to completely assure that the ball is going to go into the basket you should be able to tip it or keep it inside the cylinder so you can score.
They should eliminate all of the ticky-tack foul rule changes to help increase scoring, and take out this rule along with it. It would increase scoring and probably make games more exciting to watch. Nobody wants to watch a free throw contest all game.
Really, what the hell is the point of this rule, at all? It makes no sense to me.

Re: What is the point of offensive basket interference?
it wouldn't be fair because defenders can't go up and block the shot because it is goaltending.
wait... I'm not sure I understand the rule. I can't understand how international play do not have this. Ppl could just jack up shots and before it goes down in or on the rim, players could just dunk it.

Re: What is the point of offensive basket interference?
international rule is that the ball must hit the cylinder first before anyone can touch it. so if it rolls around the cylinder, both defense and offense are allowed to touch it. im not sure about the backboard rules. in the nba, if you swat a ball that touched the backboard first its a goal tend. not sure hwo it works in the FIBA/int'l leagues.
offensive interfence is kind of a 50-50 rule.

international ball also lets defenders grab it off the rim. there is no reason why offensive players should be able to touch it and defensive players cant. anytime the ball is in play, everyone should be allowed to touch it. its unfair to let the offensive grab it and try to score but not let the defender grab the ball to stop them.

Re: What is the point of offensive basket interference?
You're kidding right? So basically, a player shoots, the ball misses and lays on the rim, the defender sits and waits for the ball to come down while the offensive player just goes right ahead and pushes it in.
Yeah, that makes perfect sense. Either get rid of basket interference as a whole or leave it.

How does this not make sense?
Any seven foot idiot can knock in a ball bouncing around the rim if the defender has to keep his feet glued to the floor for fear of defensive goaltending.

In theory, a dunk is offensive interference, right?

Maybe that'll teach people the novel concept of boxing out. I'd much rather watch that than watching Wade, Kobe, LeBron, Dirk or other X superstar get all of his points from the free throw line all game. I feel like we're watching the NWA sometimes - National Wusses Association. If they want more excitement, free throws aren't the way to do it. At least omitting this rule makes sense.

Re: What is the point of offensive basket interference?
agree with the consensus. either take out interference all together or leave it in. shouldn't just remove offensive interference. Personally I like it the way it is.
