Re: Chicago Bulls sign Joe Smith (2 years, 10 mil)
It's kind of an underwhelming move, but a move that had to be made with the departure of P.J. Brown. I would have liked to get Scola if at all possible. Oh well. I think Paxson upgraded the front court this off-season by adding Smith and Noah, but any real advancement is going to depend on the progression of Tyrus Thomas. That could still be a couple season away.

One thing we know is TT has really improved his passing. In the summer league he was looking like Magic Johnson out there.

correct me if i'm wrong because i haven't really concentrated on his play that much, but doesn't joe smith just basically stand there and shot set shots? I mean, I've never seen him post up and he doesn't go inside much at all. also, he is fairly weak for a PF

He's not redundant, and this just shows how little you know about the NBA.
Ben Wallace = No offense. He has trouble finishing the easy stuff.
Aaron Gray = Post up player. Rookie, not quite ready for the in and out of the NBA night in night out. Spot minutes.
Joakim Noah = Inside players. Just really a finisher at this point. Dunks and easy lay ins.
Andres Nocioni = Small forward, who is out there as a four. Used to stretch the defense out. With Nocioni out there, someone usually gets open (usually Nocioni) because the low post player doesn't go out to the three point line to defend him. Three point shooter.
Tyrus Thomas = Finisher last year. This year it looks like he will be able to shoot a midrange jumpshot with some consistency, as well as penetrate after receiving the ball about 18-20 feet out. Has a baby hook out of a spin move.
So where is Joe Smith redundant on the Bulls? A big with a midrange jumpshot is a logical need for the team.
Re: Chicago Bulls sign Joe Smith (2 years, 10 mil)
Kind of like Malik Allen or PJ Brown then..
But meh - if they weren't gonna get anyone else, it's a decent enough signing.
Lot of depth at the forward spots now - Tyrus, Smith, Nocioni, Noah, Deng, Khryapha, as well as Wallace, and possibly Malik Allen or another big. As well as Thabo who can play the 3, and Griffen.

How well is the Knicks Starters vs NBA Team Starters? 60%? 50%? 40%? or are we waiting to see by being optimistic because we have a new additional player in the Starting lineup that we assume Stat sheet record says he is better with this Knick roster than the guy he is replacing?
Re: Chicago Bulls sign Joe Smith (2 years, 10 mil)
Starting Thomas would be a mistake in my opinion. The kid still has a lot to learn, and mature as a player and a person. Joe Smiths experience as a 12 year veteran would make him a better option to start him of TT, and Joe Smith gives the Bulls another scoring option.
