Well IMO there are really only 7 legit teams in the entire league. Pistons, Celtics, Magic, Spurs, Suns, Mavs and Utah. The Hornets and the Raptors are a step below that bunch.

Since when have the Lakers, Nuggets, and Rockets been considered "elite contenders?" The only elite contenders coming from the West are the Spurs, Mavs, and Suns. As for Boston and Orlando, you could say they're "elite contenders," but the case could be made that neither has won a playoff series and thus are not at the level of the top 3 West teams yet, granted that this is Boston's first year with the Big Three.

Then you remember that only one month has passed and there's really no reason to compare the two conferences at least until the All-Star break arrives.

Orlando,Detroit and Boston aren't clearly better than any of the top six teams in the East.Everyone else in the East is clearly worse than the top six teams in the West.Noone aside from Boston,Detroit and Orlando are clearly better than the Lakers,GSW or even 9-9 Houston.If you bothered to look you might notice that Houston isn't currently in the playoffs out West at 9-9 while Cleveland would host a first round series against fellow 9-9 team Indiana.Your premise seems to be based on a logic quite contrary to the sort ordinairy people use.Minnesota is actually the only team in the West that would be more than 2.5 games out of the playoffs in the East.

the Hornets and Golden State can beat any of the top teams in the East imo, even in a series their chances are not bad at all, even the Nuggets but not against Boston

no one in the East is a sure favorite over the top 4 teams of the West : Spurs Mavs Utah Suns

with that reasoning the West are still better the East, only threats are Boston, Detroit and a healthy Miami, oh and Cleveland simply b/c they have the best player but not against the Spurs as we can conclude

I forgot Seattle.Of course they are 0-10 against the West and 3-5 against the East,but they'd be more than 2.5 games out of the playoffs in the East.
