Re: what's with all the shaq-love?
I don't like the concept of countering the biggest strenghts of other teams if you have to give up one of your best assets. The Suns biggest strength was their ability to play their style against anyone but the Spurs. Once again, no other team did look too good against them last year, Shawn Marion was not the reason why Phoenix didn't win that series. Sometimes you have to accept that there is a better team and try again instead of making panic moves. I honestly believe that Phoenix was the second best team last year, they would have beat anyone else.

The Suns as configured was not going to win the championship. Their window of opportunity is close to closing as well. They needed to make a move to try and make a grab for the title now.
I mean as they were configured pre-trade not only did they have problems with the Spurs, but also the Lakers (especially after the Gasol trade). They needed to do something or they'd end up as a footnote like the Kings.

While the Spurs can stop them you can't deny the fact that the Suns were the only team who had a real opportunity to beat them in the playoffs last year. Denver didn't stand a chance, Utah did not and neither did Cleveland.
The Suns lost against a historically good team, the same thing happened to the Kings when they were facing the Lakers earlier this decade. Like I said sometimes there is only so much you can do when you face a team that is better, that doesn't mean you can't beat any other team in a best of seven series though.
Their chances to win a championship are a lot worse after the trade.

Re: what's with all the shaq-love?
That was last year though. They were in a situation where the team they had beat in successive post seasons had gotten better. Utah is a more mature team this season. So being the team they were last season wasn't going to cut it this year in the West.
Also they were ready to face the situation where they'd be forced to play the half court game with Stoudemire at the 5. If Amare gets in foul trouble they no longer had Kurt Thomas to play defense on the other squad's best big (a trade I thought was dumb then and is still pretty bad). They needed a body down there.
I don't think their chances to win are worse, I think if anything they're even with the chance to get better as they get used to playing with Shaq.

Re: what's with all the shaq-love?
They made this trade 4 years too late. If they really just wanted to shake things up and blamed Marion for post-season letdowns, they could have made a Lamar Odom swap, or possibly Elton Brand or something. Getting an almost-done Shaq was just tragically stupid. I truly and completely believe that the Lakers are behind all of the recent panic moves. With Phoenix Suns being exhibit A and the Dallas Mavericks being exhibit B (about to be exposed soon).
