Re: Impressions of the Mavericks with Kidd

Kidd’s presence affects other players – Dampier has been a positive; but when you talk about the Mavs, it comes down to Dirk. Kidd isn’t necessarily what Dirk needed at the end of the day, and ultimately he probably never will get it.

Dirk and the Mavs need a bonafide scorer – as harsh as that seems – to unleash the German to just play. He’s simply not able to carry this team, but management doesn’t get it. He confessed himself that the game has been “too hard”. Kidd helps to distribute the ball the way Nash did, and that brings back some of his comfort level; but the kind of freedom I’m talking about replaces Gasol and puts Dirk next to Kobe. Then you have a legitimate 32 ppg scorer. The Mavs are wanting that from Dirk now, but without a low post game, it's too difficult to consistantly produce.

Kidd's trying to set Dirk up with open jumpers, but teams will figure out a pick and pop. Right now, they get a little action going to Damp at the basket, but not enough to draw teams from the perimeter. It's still hard for the big man.

Re: Impressions of the Mavericks with Kidd

i think it turns out to be a good trade, at least until jason retires or becomes ineffective. i think he can play to 40 though.

Re: Impressions of the Mavericks with Kidd

I have been impressed by them for certain stretches in the last few weeks. A lot of people don't understand the value of a player who can consistently get his teammates easy shots.

I think they will win most, if not all, of their next 6 games and pick up some momentum heading into the final stretch.

Re: Impressions of the Mavericks with Kidd

After losing Harris, their defensive efficiency has actually improved. The offensive efficiency is lower but that has more to do with Josh Howard and Stack coming back from injury (and playing like crap). Kidd has played a lot better with the Mavs than he did with the Nets. He is actually shooting better, penetrating and dishing/going to the basket more, making good moves in the post, getting more steals, and playing with a lot more passion. I do believe that they will come around. Dampier and Terry have already benefited greatly from Kidd's presence. With Devin Harris running the point, you couldn't imagine Damp being a factor offensively. Now if Dirk and Howard can be more consistent, the team is going to be much better. Still, they only lost the games against the Spurs and the Lakers on the final possessions.

Re: Impressions of the Mavericks with Kidd

Kidd just turns the ball over way to much, they can't have so many turnovers again the Spurs, the Suns, the Lakers.

Re: Impressions of the Mavericks with Kidd

The interiors defense sucks without Diop.
Avery hasnt got used to Kidd as a leader.

Main differences.

Re: Impressions of the Mavericks with Kidd

It's still too early to be definitive, the full impact will be felt come playoff time, but I'm impressed. Our productivity level isn't all that much higher statistically, but I'm a bit more confident in the actual way we operate.

People have to realize this was never made to necessarily jump a level in the standings, we're already a top tier team, in any other year we'd be a top 3-4 ranked team.

This was a shakeup needed to energize the environment with and around the team. Coming off that dissapointing loss, there was a noticeable lull in our play, we seemed to be pretty much going through the motions. Kidd's arrival sparked us, and a lot of our players have been happy with how his presence eases their game.

Like Croco noted, his shooting is up in Dallas significantly. I'm not really sure with what instances he would shoot in NJ, but in Dallas he's picking his spots really well. The past two games he's shot more threes than he has in awhile also.

As far as how the existing Mavs are adjusting to him, there's still a bit of of a conflict there. They aren't really moving like he's accustomed, you'll see him cut across the lane and have to kick out instead of find cutters like he wants. I think that's something adjustable overtime, we have a decent amount of players who can finish.

All in all, we knew coming in that he was going to change us offensively, as far as going from an isolation oriented game to a more free flowing offense. It's going to take more than 8 games for the transition to really become apparent, but when you have the status Kidd does, players are going to buy into what you want.

that to me is really the only positive the trade brought. the mavs had just been coasting through the season and the trade for kidd shook things up. but i assume the mavs would have tried to pick up their play once the playoffs came around, so i'm not sure this will end up having a huge effect there.

there's no way kidd keeps up his shooting in dallas. he's almost shooting 60% from 3 and that's just not something he's going to come close to sustaining.
