Re: The MVP Double Standard
Right, eight of the last nine NBA titles have gone to teams featuring those two players (Shaq and Duncan). They've easily been the two most valuable players of the last decade.

Re: The MVP Double Standard
LeBron James (05-06 season)
PPG 31.4
RPG 7.0
APG 6.6
SPG 1.6
BPG 0.8
TPG 3.29
FG% 0.480
FT% 0.738
3P% 0.335
FGA 23.076
FGM 11.076
MPG 42.5
GP 79
team record (50-32)
Kobe Bryant (05-06 season)
PPG 35.4
RPG 5.3
APG 4.5
SPG 1.8
BPG 0.4
TPG 3.13
FG% 0.450
FT% 0.850
3P% 0.347
FGA 27.163
FGM 12.225
MPG 41.0
GP 80
team record (45-37)
With superior overall numbers (4 less points on 4 fewer shots per game) and better team record (50 wins to 45) I will argue that LeBron’s claim to the MVP trophy in the 05-06 season had far more weight then Kobe's.
That he came second to Nash in a landslide decision was the true travesty.
-------
LeBron had the better individual season that year but I still believed Kobe to be the better overall on court basketball payer. I no longer believe this to be the case. The gap has closed enough in the disparity between each players defense (I view Kobe as the better individual defender against perimeter players however LeBron is a more versatile defender and a better team defender) and late game abilities that LeBron's ability to dominate while still remaining within the confines of the team concept has now propelled him slightly above Kobe (IMO).

Keep in mind for adjustment in record as the West is superior then the East right now, and then. You could roughly drop the Cavs to a 42 win team at best in the West, and bump the Lakers up to a 55 win team if they played in the East. The profound difference between the West/East right now has to be also factored in.
It would be a lot easier to compare Kobe/LeBron and their teams if they both played in the same conference. And the West would be the ideal one as that's the conference that is stacked with MVP's, championship teams, and a great winning conference of teams stacked 1 through 10.

No offense, but of the last four NBA titles, two were won by Eastern Conference teams. The only western conference title winner is San Antonio, as the Lakers last threepeat squad is long gone. Get back to me when some other western conference team wins a title.

That seems like a great deal of guesswork to me.
The facts are that the team with the best record in the league hailed from the eastern conference that season (Detroit), as did the eventual NBA champions (Miami). I agree that the west is and has been the overall better conference but the disparity in competition was not as wide as you make it out to be. All NBA teams play all NBA teams at least twice a season; it is not as though the Cavaliers benefited from playing the Bobcats 10 plus times.
A ten game swing in favor of the west in adjusted conference disparity seems like reaching to me. Such things simply cannot be quantified as fact to back an individual’s case.
