Cursed honor
Adelman finished third in the NBA's Coach of the Year voting, and that was fine with him. He observed that recent winners Avery Johnson of Dallas and Mike D'Antoni of Phoenix are in danger of losing their jobs, and other honorees of this decade including Hubie Brown, Rick Carlisle, Larry Brown and Doc Rivers did not last much longer in their positions.
"Maybe it's good not to get it," Adelman said. "It's nice to be mentioned - but don't get it, you know?"
Adelman was complimentary of Ogden native Byron Scott, who won the award as a tribute to New Orleans' outstanding season. Adelman gave Scott his first coaching job as a member of the Sacramento staff.
And meanwhile Jerry Sloan, who's never won it before, has been coaching the Jazz for 20 consecutive seasons. Interesting....

The NBA have been giving coach of the year to teams that vastly improve. Sometimes when teams make that leap people expect too much out of the team and few teams actually fulfill that expectation. When teams eventually come short, those coaches get the axe.
Yeah pretty much it. The coaches of the year usually gets so many pressure and when they underachieve the next year or the year after that it's always the coach. Management rather keeps their players than coaches for obvious reasons.
Scott is in danger then.
I'm too lazy to dig up but I'm sure there are a lot of ex-coaches of the years who were successful and stayed longer. (Can someone confirm this?) Hubie Brown retired though as far I know so I won't include him in the cursed list.
