SI.Com: D'Antoni to Knicks
Quote:
Mike D'Antoni has accepted the New York Knicks' lucrative job offer, ending a week-long battle with the Chicago Bulls, who also pursued the Phoenix Suns' coach, a league source told SI.com.
The Knicks reportedly gave D'Antoni a four-year deal worth about $24 million. He had two years and close to $9 million remaining on his contract with the Suns, whom he led to two Western Conference finals and an average of 58 victories in four full seasons.
The hiring completes a whirlwind week for D'Antoni, whom many thought would land with the Bulls, believing their roster better matched his fast-break style. But D'Antoni had been saying quietly all along that New York was as attractive an option for him as Chicago.

I don't think the Knicks have the right personnel at all for his system. I could see if there was a franchise player he'd like to build around, but I don't see one person worth D'Antoni going to New York for. And yes, moves will be made, but most of the players on that roster are going to be very hard to trade.
Chicago would've been a better fit. I would've waited for Flip to get fired and gone to Detroit.

Re: Bsoton Globe: D'Antoni to Knicks
Lol its a funny move really. I mean under Isiah werent they just running and gunning without playing defense. How will that be different under D'Antoni. They need a major overhaul of the roster

Great move by the Knicks, D'Antoni knows how to coach and he will look to clean house together with Donnie Walsh. Another step into the right direction, hopefully they can make the needed overhaul now.

Re: SI.Com: D'Antoni to Knicks
I'd love to have 30 million dollars, but I'd rather have 20 million dollars and not be miserable.Between the NY press, your cap situation and that roster you're going to be in a living hell. It's going to take two years to get started on that mess.Three years is a stretch, but it's possible.Personally I don't think Donnie Walsh is smart enough to fix that mess any time soon and I don't think that organization has the patience for what it'd really take.

Unless they move Marbury, Curry and Randolph I can't imagine this working well. After that it gets less nauseating. I can imagine guys like Jeffries, Lee, Crawford, etc., doing fine under D'Antoni.

The Knicks should have hired Avery Johnson instead they need a change of philosophy.

Re: SI.Com: D'Antoni to Knicks
I want to see the coach who gets Curry and Randolph to defend on a level that is slightly above horrible, it's just not going to happen no matter how hard you try.
This is not going to be a quick fix and Walsh said it when he was introduced, you can't build up in a matter of one season what has been destroyed this entire decade, it is impossible. Give them some time and I'm pretty sure there are going to be good results.

Re: SI.Com: D'Antoni to Knicks
why do people think that d'antoni only knows the run n gun style? it's what best suited him with the suns and he used it. give him tim duncan and his defense would look much better, take away steve nash and his running style would turn to crap.
it'll be interesting to see what he does with this knicks team. still, that's a ton of money to give to him.

Re: SI.Com: D'Antoni to Knicks
I'm puzzled. Who would coach Phoenix then? Does this mean Phoenix' philosophy will change then?
