Lebrons Second Game - Heat 82, Cavaliers 78

Pepsi Pro Summer League Game #4 - Heat 82, Cavaliers 78

July 9, 2003
Game #4 – Miami vs. Cleveland
Heat 82, Cavaliers 78

Orlando, FL – A 2003 lottery pick stole the show during the opening game of Day Two during the Pepsi Orlando Pro Summer League – and his name was NOT LeBron James.

Miami rookie Dwyane Wade scored 10 points, including the game-winning jumper with 4.1 seconds remaining, as the Heat defeated Cleveland, 82-78, at the RDV Sportsplex. Caron Butler led the Heat (2-0) with 15 points, while Sean Lampley added 11. James led the Cavaliers (1-1) and all scorers with 17 points on 7-of-18 shooting from the floor. Carlos Boozer added 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Cleveland guard Dajuan Wagner missed the game due to a right knee effusion, or swelling. He will be re-evaluated tomorrow by the Cavaliers’ medical staff.

James scored the Cavaliers’ first five points of the afternoon, draining a long jumper from the left wing, then converting a twisting layup on Cleveland’s first two possessions. The heralded rookie scored seven points in the opening stanza, on 3-of-5 shooting from the floor. However, Butler and Lampley combined for 13 points in the quarter, helping Miami grab a 20-17 lead.

The Cavaliers opened the second quarter with a 9-3 spurt. A three-pointer by Jerod Ward with 7:40 left in the stanza gave Cleveland a 24-23 lead, its first advantage of the day. The second quarter was slowed by a combined 20 fouls, resulting in 29 free throw attempts. The Cavaliers shot 60.0 percent in the second quarter and led 45-41 at intermission. Miami missed 10 of its 29 free throws during the first half.

Midway through the third quarter, the Heat went on an 8-0 run, capped off by a short, hook shot by Marquis Still with 2:55 left, turning a four-point deficit into a four-point edge, 53-49. They outscored Cleveland, 19-10, in the period and led 60-55 heading into the final stanza. The Cavs struggled from the floor during the period, shooting just 29.4 percent.

With 7:27 remaining in the game, the Heat extended their lead to 66-58 after a short hook shot by former University of Florida standout, Udonis Haslem. Haslem was not finished, as he converted on a three-point play with 6:28 remaining. He had seven points in the quarter. Despite the play of the ex-Gator down low, the Cavaliers would not go away.

Kristaps Valters hit consecutive jumpers from the left side, including a three-pointer, then converted a fast break with a left handed layup to trim the deficit to 69-67 with just over six minutes left in the contest. Cleveland later tied the score at 74 after a long jumper from the right side by James with just 2:41 remaining.

Trailing 78-74, Cleveland would still not die. James scored on a layup with 17 seconds left and was fouled on the play. He missed the ensuing free throw, but Boozer tipped in the rebound to tie the score at 78. As time ticked down, Wade drove to the basket, pulled up and nailed the short jumper with 4.1 seconds remaining to give the Heat the lead. On the next possession, Boozer was called for a charge, then Rasual Butler hit a pair of free throws to ice the win. Miami finished 39-of-50 from the foul line on the afternoon.

Damn. That would have been a fun game to watch.

This is going to be one heck of a rookie class.

any idea on James' stat line... looks like he had a pretty good game... Wade is also looking good at the point from what i've heard... if he can make the switch, Miami could become a nice run and gun team... thanks for the info!

The only problems I can see right now are that he's a little weak from 3 ball range, and is turning the ball over a little too often (4 times in the first game, 5 in this game)

You have to remember that no matter the hype, he's still an 18 year old rookie learning a new position.

He's got a world of time to improve.

He has a very nice looking shot though, so I wouldn't worry about the shooting. He'll never be Dell Curry or Steve Kerr, but he'll be able to hit them when needed.

I wouldn't worry about the turnovers either. Summer league games are rag-tag games and he is playing against a higher level of comp running NBA PG spot for the first time at 18 yrs old. He isn't turning the ball over any more than most other rookies or even 2nd year guys so far in the summer league games.

The nba/tv showed the last bit of the game when I turned it on and LBJ reminds me so much of Magic Johnson. He is going to be an excellent player.

Back to the Lakers/Warriors game...
