What does NBA/Basketball mean to Americans?

Hi!

I didn't really know where to put this thread, so I just put it in the NBA section.
Right now I'm doing a school project about what the NBA and basketball means to the american people or their culture, and since I'm from Norway I don't know so much about it than I have read on the internet. I was really hoping that someone in here could help me out, that would really mean a lot to me!

Thanks

I know where you should put this thread, but I shall refrain from being crude.

Is this a school task? Try and piss off an entire internet community with silly little questions?

Re: What does NBA/Basketball mean to Americans?

That's a really vague question.

What does it mean to Americans?

I don't know if it means a lot to Americans relative to other sports in our country (Baseball/Football in particular).

But it means a lot to be the best in basketball to Americans.

It's forgivable in other sports for Americans to lose to other countries. In hockey Americans are good, but there's plenty of great countries that are superior. In baseball, Americans are also really good, but it's understandable if Americans lose to other latin American countries or Asian nations. In soccer, we're clearly not good enough and in (American) football, there is, of course, no world competition.

In basketball, though? It's inexcusable. We're the best, and we're supposed to be the best every year. We're supposed to win all the time. We're supposed to play well all the time. We're supposed to beat every opponent. There are plenty of formidable opponents that are great of course (Spain, Argentina), but it's not forgivable to lose to them. It's seen as a failure.

Basketball is the only major sport where anything outside of first place is unforgivable.

Again, nationally, I think basketball doesn't mean as much to Americans as it does internationally. Nationally, a lot of sports fans prefer baseball and football, and many are even disillusioned to the NBA as a league.

But internationally, those same sports fans that have no interest in basketball would cringe if we lost to another international team. We have the best players, and we should have the best teams.

Americans take a lot of pride in how good they are in basketball. It's the only sport where (for the most part) we are expected to win every single time.

Re: What does NBA/Basketball mean to Americans?

Oh, sorry guys if I offended you, but that is the way my English teacher said it, so again, sorry...

But thank you Pay Ton, that helped a lot

I don't have to do this assignment, but I love basketball, so I said that to my teacher, and then he said "Ok, but what does it have to do with multiculturalism and cross-cultural communication?". I didn't know, so I asked him to help me out, and he came up with that..

Sorry if I offended someone, didn't mean to

-Rikjense

EDIT: We were almost free to choose the assignment, he just had to approve it first.

Re: What does NBA/Basketball mean to Americans?

Porn is just angry because no one wants to learn about british culture. Bland food and warm beer is everything i needed to know to know that i didnt want to learn more.

The US is a big country though and the popularity and what basketball means to people can vary greatly by region/state. In North Carolina, for example, basketball is king. In the south though, basketball is often an after thought and football reigns supreme. I don't think there is any part of the country though where basketball gets the amount of attention that soccer gets in europe or football gets in the south

Re: What does NBA/Basketball mean to Americans?

We have the best basketball players in the world. Not winning Gold in the Olympics to us is like Canada not winning Gold in ice hockey to them.

-It's probably the second most popular/watched team sport in the country(baseball seems to be dying, (American)Football will always be #1)

So yeah that should answer your question.

-American(Football) isn't an Olympic sport because our worst high school team would win 156-0
