In theory you might be able to clone the stuff he needs and replace it. At least I read some speculation that they might try something like that somehow. I don't know that it's ever really been done in a real world setting.

There is actually an orthopedic surgery that has been very successful in regenerating cartilage. Basically they drill holes in the tibial head and base of the femur and full it with stem cells.
