NBA Gold Medal or NBA Championship?

If you were an NBA player, what would you rather have?

Ring and it's not close

International play probably means more to other countries though...I look at being selected to the team as an accolade in itself..cause we had the 04 hiccup but it looks like we're back to automatic golds...

But the team is comprised of NBA players...in their offseason, the primary goal for them is always the ring

Re: Gold Medal or NBA Championship?

In basketball, its got to be a title.

In hockey its different. The majority of players say its a gold medal. But in hockey international play is so much closer that it really becomes a pride thing. There isn't the same parity of top tier countries in basketball.

Re: Gold Medal or NBA Championship?

Being from the USA, I'd say the NBA Championship... if I played for another country and lived there when I wasn't playing in the NBA, I might lean towards the gold medal.

Re: Gold Medal or NBA Championship?

NBA Championship until Euroleague, etc catch up to NBA in terms of talent. World Cup is holy grail in soccer but that's because there's parity amongst top-tier countries. Similar to what R-Star said about hockey.

EDIT: One caveat. If you're a non-American NBA player, I could see them really wanting a Gold Medal as some type of David-Goliath story of Spain or Argentine overcoming odds and beating a Dream Team iteration.

Ring, but you have to have both to be considered one of the greats

I don't know about that one. How often do people bring up the 2004 choke job when discussing Tim Duncan's legacy?

You don't have to have a medal to be a great NBA player.... that's like saying you have to have an NCAA title

The only way i would take a gold medal over a ring is if i was winning that ring 12th man on the bench style. Guys like jason caffey have rings, only the 12 best a country can muster up (usually) can win a gold medal regardless of their role on a team

Re: Gold Medal or NBA Championship?

That kind of bleeds into the same european discussion though. The only NBA 12th manner that's going to be in the Olympics is going to be playing for another country, at which point winning a gold is automatically that country and player's main agenda. A lot of those marginal Europeans look at the NBA as just another league. Rudy Fernandezes and Kleiza's go back and forth between leagues.

Yao Ming could've been a legend but the duty he felt he had to his country ruined his feet.

Re: Gold Medal or NBA Championship?

Who will be remembered more fondly, Jason Terry or Michael Redd? I love my country, but I'm taking the ring.

Michael redd was good enough to represent his country, not alot of guys can say that, besides terry was a ky contributor to that mavs team. The better question is who will be remembered more michael redd amd his gold medal or brian cardinal and his 2011 championship ring, becauase they essentially helped their teams the same.
