Re: Rondo speaks on Ray

Ray Allen leaving for Miami needs to stop being a story. Boston had replaced him before he even made his decision. The Clippers cancelled his scheduled visit so they could pay Jamal Crawford. Miami was the only team in the league that made him their top priority for this past summer. Ray's already made all the money he'll ever need, so he went where he was wanted and would be able to play for championships. It wasn't any sort of betrayal, or cop-out, or fracturing of Boston's chemistry, it was just a "life goes on" moment where both sides were better off moving on. That's all there is to say.

I don't think that's in the equation.

Stop being a story? Season hasn't even started yet.

And to act like a guy who made up a "Big 3" that helped resurrect a classic franchise moving to said team's biggest rival (Lebron's team) isn't a big deal or shouldn't be a story is foolish.

Yeah and you're misrepresenting some things. LAC cancelled the meeting because it was becoming clearer and clearer it was down to Boston (who, let's not forget, was offering more money) and Miami.

I tend to side with the crowd that believes Ray helps Miami more than he helps Boston.

How do you figure Ray Allen doesn't care about winning?

It's a guy going from a team that wasn't a good fit for him to a contender that wanted and needed him. It seems like it should be a story because of the Lebron/Celtics stuff and writers trying to play up an Allen/Rondo feud, but it's as simple as a free agent leaving a bad(in terms of fit) situation for a good one. Happens multiple times every summer.

That's why you have a front office, to sell players on the team so you don't have to settle for inferior talent. The Clippers were the only contender in the running that could have offered him the option to be the clear-cut starter at shooting guard, and they have Chris Paul to get him the ball exactly where he wants it. Part of the reason Ray left was that Boston moved Avery Bradley ahead of him in the rotation, playing time and status matters to him.

I don't think Ray Allen's signing with the Heat was motivated by some sort of "well, i will be a 7th or 8th player on the Heat, but a championship will enhance my legacy!" reasoning.

In all seriousness: when thinking about Gary Payton the basketball player, does anyone put ANY weight in him winning a championship as a scrub player in Miami?

The way I look at it is that this is too much drama for a role player switching teams.

Re: Rondo speaks on Ray

But it's not just some roleplayer. It's one of the 3 guys that helped revitalize arguably the league's most storied franchise after two decades of sucking. Regardless of how far he's fallen, it's still a story in the deadest part of the offseason when a name like Ray Allen jumps ship to their biggest rival in the conference.

I doubt he thought this stint in Miami is going to move him up twenty spots on the all-time list but he's a competitor, and he wants to play in meaningful basketball games. He'll play crunch time in the playoffs on this Miami roster, and that's absolutely something that motivates him. He was never signing up to average twenty a game on some lottery-bound squad

Gary Payton probably does. I guarantee that, if given the chance to do it over, he wouldn't decide to go average twelve and five on a miserable Knicks team instead of getting a ring.

Allen was always just a hired gun and was the first guy that Ainge shopped every February. It's notable because Ray Allen stepping into Mike Miller's role makes Miami a better team, but it didn't happen because of bad blood, it didn't screw Boston over, and it doesn't diminish what Allen did in the five years in Boston.

I understand its considered one of the bigger stories because of the combination of the rivalry and obsession over when Boston's Big 3 era would end. The media obviously oversells everything.

Re: Rondo speaks on Ray

Yeah and that hired gun had a solid case for finals MVP in the only championship the Celtics have enjoyed in twenty something years. I try to stay away from the narrative sports drama that is ESPN, but Ray taking his talents to south beach is obviously a story at this point in the offseason.

regarding GP - I obviously put some weight on it. Yeah he was a backup and a shadow of his former self, but more often than not he was playing down the stretch. He hit some HUGE shots for us in the Finals back in 2006.

Payton was awful that year but I do recall him hitting a huge jumper or two in the finals.
