Just what the league needs to do. Stick to their chain of command and appoint another out of touch white lawyer who currently oversees all of their business entities. Yeah, good call.

What the league needs in a commissioner is somebody knowledgeable about the game itself, whose passion for it can't even begin to be questioned. It doesn't pay to have a commissioner that a large portion of the league won't respect. The very fact that Stern selected Silver himself equates this to a theocracy. What a joke.

I'd like to see what happens with flopping or players complaining if that every happened.

He'd probably force Kobe to retire if he thought he was close to another ring.

Wow. Message board posters everywhere are celebrating for whatever reason.

I certainly don't agree with everything Stern has done over the years, but overall he's been a great commish for the league. It will be a sad day when he leaves.

not sure why people love a guy who has overseen two work stoppages, whose policy of expansion watered down the quality of competition and created a couple non-viable franchises (and dont get me started on the league owning one of those franchsises and the farce that lead to), and whose efforts at rules changes have actually hurt the quality of play and rendered the game less watchable than it was when he took it over

Stern gets a lot of credit for riding the Larry/Magic wave and being around at the moment of the Nike/Mike revolution - I would argue that he was fortunate in his timing, that culturally and commercially the NBA was fortunate in its positioning and that many of Stern's decisions have impacted the quality of play and quality of competition negatively

not sure why so many want to give him credit and even where it might be due I think it's pretty clear he has overstaid his welcome

Too bad, he really elevated this league and the game itself.

Am I the only one who think it's weird that he's retiring in the middle of the season though?
