I'd be highly surprised if they didn't have their guy lined up prior to firing the current coach. Pretty sure this is just Lakers management going through the motions to make things look official and not be too disrespectful to Brown.

I don't agree that firing him 5 games in is classless, its not like its his first year coaching the Lakers. But I do agree its classless for the reason that they just publicly stated yesterday that they were standing behind him.
