No, it isn't creative. If New Orleans changed their name to the Trees people would still be complaining. In fact, I can't think of a single new mascot that hasn't been crapped on by message boards.

Would have to be "Lakes" for that to be an accurate comparison, and it could obviously be because I grew up hearing the name "Lakers," but "Treers" just sounds a whole lot stupider.

No one's mocking the Mighty Ducks because that name was picked ages ago and we're not talking about hockey. "Bucks" and "Cardinals" just don't sound as ridiculous as "Pelicans" nor do they conjure a similarly goofy creature.

They can salvage this with a properly-pulled-off identity, unlike what the Thunder did, but it doesn't help they're changing their colors to navy, red, and gold, which will look something like this:

Or if they don't use those yucky shades of gold/red, it could look like this...

Hopefully the latter. Those old Nuggets unis were horrible.

Not particularly, they started in Minnesota. In LA the name makes no sense. But Lakers is as much a Minnesota name as Dodgers was a Brooklyn one or the Packers a Green Bay one.

Maybe people will get use to it over time but right now it just doesn't go right with the New Orleans name. Would it be morally wrong to name them the New Orlean Hurricanes. lolz.
