Re: The Hornets are changing their names to...
Eh, in a league with the Raptors, Magic, Heat, Lakers in LA, Thunder, Utah Jazz, Nuggets, Memphis Grizzlies, and Wizards, it won't even be all that bad one the newness wears off. At least it makes sense for the region, and isn't something generic like Hornets, Cavaliers, or Warriors.

I just don't like them changing their name at all. The basketball fans in New Orleans have been through enough instability

Re: The Hornets are changing their names to...
It was, for a long time.
I have no problem with the name... sort of has a retro feel. Plus, they can play that "fly pelicans, fly!" clip from Scarface during timeouts.

Re: The Hornets are changing their names to...
I would have gone with the New Orleans Brass, personally, but I see no problem with the name change, and I'm sure I eventually won't think twice about it just like I did with the Thunder.
Has there ever been a name/logo/uniform change that wasn't met with near-universal disdain by all the message board dorks?

Caron_Butler kept changing his name to whatever flavor of the month heat player was on the roster before he stuck with -33- and I don't think anyone said anything either.

You should have seen the baseball board back in 1908 when the Boston Americans peached the name Red Stockings from the NL club.

Re: The Hornets are changing their names to...
Najee hit the fundamental nail on the head a couple pages back. It's just not a name that inspires players or fans, it's clunky for marketing purposes, and it's easily mocked.
I do believe there's at least a useful smidgen of psychological value in what a team is named. If there were any way of running the perfect scientific experiment across parallel universes, it would be clearly demonstrable that (all other things being equal) a team named the Pelicans (or Weasels, or Duck-Billed Platypi) would win the championship less often than teams with names like Warriors, Supersonics, or Celtics. The name should be something to live up to or relate to, not to live down or get past. Not to say that the franchise can't win a title with this moniker, but I honestly believe it will take longer. People will need to get so used to the name that they forget what it means. Yes, the Lakers' name is non-sensical, but a) it doesn't conjure up goofy associations, and b) it's been attached to Los Angeles for half a century, which is plenty of time to develop a collective blind spot about any initial ridiculousness.

Re: The Hornets are changing their names to...
Nicknames don't have an affect on winning percentage; players, coaches, and front offices do. The Detroit Red Wings have done plenty fine for themselves despite being represented by a car tire with wings, and the Timberwolves haven't been able to capitalize on their "intimidating" name.

They'll just be called the Pels after a while... Still stupid IMO.
