Louisiana is the Pelican State. The brown pelican is the state bird and appears on the state flag and seal, and official state painting. Moreover, the Pelicans played minor league baseball in New Orleans in all but nine seasons from 1887-1959 and in 1977.
Gayle Benson, Benson's wife, told Fox Sports New Orleans recently her preference for new team colors was navy blue, red and gold.
The Hornets came to New Orleans in 2002 from Charlotte. New Orleans has also had an NBA team called the Jazz, which moved to Salt Lake City in 1979.

Who cares if it is on a state flag? Calling a professional sports team "Pelicans" is nothing short of horrible. The team may as well keep the "Hornets" nickname.

Yeah, let's just be grateful that no one's named a professional team after that awful Disney flick, The Mighty Ducks. That would be really bad.

I like people say every new name is horrible. You know how much shit you would get naming a team the Lakers today with no history.

I don't get it, is Pelican's supposed to be a bad name because it's not some beastly animal? Why is no one mocking the bucks, cardinals or mighty ducks?

Not to mention the pelican is the mascot of Tulane University, which also is located in New Orleans. So know we're talking about a university and a professional team in the same city sharing the same mascot nickname.

No, "Pelicans" is a bad name to me because it sounds cumbersome and rather comical. I just have visions of a big-beaked bird that eats fish. The imagery I associate with a pelican is not awe-inspiring nor does it lend itself to effective marketing or branding.
