Q Rating with the general public - the casual fans that'll just buy a cool jersey, doesn't know a ton? Say Bill Russell and you have to explain who he is. Say Doctor J and his name will more often register.

I said Dr J was like wow.
But with reference to the two greatest legends I was obviously talking about Russell and Jordan. That's why i voted for him.

That's the first thing I thought when I first heard about him changing his number.

In a lot of people's opinion, Julius Erving is among the top 20 players ever and possibly in the top 15. He's certainly ranks among the top five small forwards ever to play.

And as far as marketability and fan reaction -- Dr. J was essentially the marketing predecessor (and an influence on) Michael Jordan's style, along with David Thompson.

This is Russell but I would say dr. J is one of the five mot recognizable basketball legends to the general public.

I'd argue that Dr J's best years were while wearing 32, in the ABA

Re: Best Player to Wear #6?

That would mean 3 people voted Horry for 5, and I have trouble believing that.

Which is why I was confused by him seeming to list Russell and Irving as the top 2. Apparently he either meant Dr./MJ or Russell/MJ.

Was thinking this, but he'd have to be 5th behind Magic, Jordan, Bird, and Kareem in my opinion. I think I just made the Mt. Rushmore of basketball legends.

Honestly, I love Kareem and thinks he's the greatest ever, but in terms of the general populace I would say both Dr. J and the late Wilt are bigger celebs. Kareem never showed personality, outside of his cameo in Airplane! of course.
