Stupid New NBA Rule! Can someone please explain it?
Ok! Can someone please explain the new two minute rule? Apparently, the hack-a-shaq strategy is no longer useful in the last two minutes of play. What exactly is this two minute rule?
Has the league been proposing this rule for many years and it's finally here, or did Stern just wake up out of bed and say "Hey, I should make a new two-minute rule." Why is this rule important this season, but not ten or fifteen seasons ago? |

The rule has been in place since the '08-'09 season.

It's been around a lot longer than that. Hack-a-Shaq was never legal in the last two minutes of play. The two-minute rule was created to prevent teams from intentionally fouling Wilt Chamberlain.

The league clearly favors perimeter oriented players at this time.

Yeah, they clearly don't cater to big men. The rule is just in place to promote more entertaining/healthy competition. No one wants to see games decided in the last 2 minutes by "Hack-A-."
"08-09" confused the hell out of me. The rule is much older than that. Where'd that come from? |

Big men are allowed to plow you over with no penalty. Even worse if it's a popular big man like Howard. The slightest defense or contact is right away FOUL FOUL FOUL! In other words, the league makes it easy for players like Shaq and Dwight to accumulate massive points. Rasheed Wallace's "BALL DON'T LIE" quote is one of the best quotes I've heard in my life. Sure enough when Shaq and Dwight go to the line, the BALL DON'T LIE. : )

JBKB, you sound quite out of touch. Shaq and Dwight got/get beaten up without getting calls. The refs seem to try to decide whether contact is a foul based on the recipient's size. Further, it's very easy to draw charges on these bigs. They certainly aren't allowed to dole out extra contact. It's more true that they're penalized for the same or less contact than smaller players.

Re: Stupid New NBA Rule! Can someone please explain it?
Shaq weighed 325 pounds, so I would expect the league to be intelligent enough to realize more contact was necessary to properly defend a person of his size.
For anyone who knows physics, Force = Mass x Acceleration. The huge force from Shaq's (mass x acceleration) could only be matched if the same force was applied back. Shaq and Dwight can apply huge force on you, but you can't on them. Until the league understands basic physics, the big men will always be at an advantage. Most big men are horrible at basketball (Shaq, Dwight, etc), but they are able to thrive because the league has so many rules that allow them to be dominant. Thank GOD for the defensive 3-second illegal defense. Now, if only the referees can wear thicker glasses and actually see when the rule is violated. |

and the rest of what you're talking about is nonsense the fact that you can only bring up 2 guys enjoying these supposed advantages and that one of them is retired is pretty damning to your position from the get go the fact that you see both players as in any way similar in the way the play (or played) the game speaks poorly to your knowledge of both players as well as the game itself the fact that you stipulate 'that most big men are bad at basketball' is sublimely wrong headed and the fact that you feel that big men are thriving in this day and age plainly counterfactual |

Re: Stupid New NBA Rule! Can someone please explain it?
and none of your points address your concern regarding the so called 'new' and 'stupid' rule - do you know why the rule was put in place? because no one wants to watch a game of free throws - the quality of the product suffers and the customer is turned off - Herr Stern thinks consumer first

Re: Stupid New NBA Rule! Can someone please explain it?
The NBA doesn't want the last two minutes of the game to last twenty minutes, so they implemented the "new" rule to remove the incentive for teams to foul every five seconds when trailing. They want the pace of the last two minutes to be as close to the pace of the rest of the game as possible. And I think the rule is that fouls away from the ball in the last two minutes result in two shots and the ball.
EDIT: I googled and this link mentions the rule and actually dives into whether the league will expand the rule in the future to last all game. http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nba-ba...8614--nba.html |

Watch Howard out there. When he gets frustrated he absolutely hammers his shoulder repeatedly into defenders when he's playing his back to the basket game, and a foul is never called. I'd use his FTA as some sort of proof, but obviously that would be stupid considering the rampant Hack-A-Howard that goes on. I felt Shaq pushed heavy on this and its been carried ever since, but is a fallacy. The only guys who complain are big men who can't shoot free throws for shit.
