Pekovic is a nice player but they're gonna get stuck paying him max money because some other team is going to offer it. He's not worth that kind of money. On top of that, they need to start contemplating Rubio's extension and they cant do that with Pekovic and Love taking up most of the cap. Pau becomes a valuable expiring next year and is perfectly suited for Adelman's offense. And it shows Love that they're trying to win now as opposed to later.

Hollinger analysis says that Josh Smith is worth two more wins than Rudy Gay.

Even if you assume that getting out of Los Angeles improves Pau to some degree, he's not going to do a heck of a lot more than what Pekovic is giving them now, is way more expensive this year and next, and leaves them growing rapidly weaker when Love is deciding whether he's going to stick around(which he isn't anyway, but still). If Pau was one of the best bigs in the league right now this might make sense, but at this point his best case is useful post-up option for two or three years. As far as Rubio's extension, Pekovic isn't going to kill that, Minnesota doesn't have any bad contracts on the roster.

I really don't think the Hawks front office got rid of Joe Johnson for peanuts so that they could make a trade for Rudy Gay. Granted I think he'd fit in well with the Hawks, just doesn't seem to make much sense.
