efg% gives doesn't penalize 3 point shooters.

For example a player goes 6/10 on layups that's 12 points and 60%

Another player goes 4/10 but they are all 3 point attempts. He's still getting his team the same amount of points (12) so his efg% would also be 60%

If you went by regular FG% the first player would be looked as a 60% shooter while the second would only be at 40% even though they both produced the same amount of points for their team.

eFG% is a measure of the points produced by the shots you take. Shots from 23' go in less often than shots from 12'. But that 23 footer is worth an extra point. So, if DeMar DeRozan shoots 4/10 and Kyle Korver shoots 4/10 from behind the arc, have they had the same shooting night? One of those guys produced 12 points and the other eight, even though they both shot .400 from the field. Whether you want to divide the number of three pointers half and add it to the made FGs or subtract made free throws from points scored, divide that by two and the result by FGA the result is the same.

I'm not wild about true shooting percentage as it's just scoring efficiency divided by two.

PER is debatable for numerous reasons as it's based on some subjective assumptions related to the value of various stats while ignoring others completely

but efg and ts really arent

all efg does is says something along the lines of if you take 100 shots inside the arc and make 43 of them your efforts were worth 86 points and if you take and make the same shots outside the arc your efforts are worth 129 points which shows the real value of three point shots (shooting 34% from behind the arc is slightly better than shooting 50% within it - basic scoreboard)

ts is similar but adds the value of being able to get to the line and make ftas into the mix

if the question is who is the more efficient scorer these stats are the answer

@dee-zy it's actually divided by (2*tsa) which breaks down FG attempts and FT attempts and therefore takes into account attempts and trips to the line - this factor in part is why shaq's ts% is not all that much higher than his efg (and in some seasons lower): while he got alot of points at the line he missed out on a lot more

But what I have noticed is it of course is offense oriented. How cool would it be if a defensive stat was created like PPG against.
