Alonzo Mourning, Anthony Carter, and Laphonso Ellis to the Mavs; Nick Van Exel, Shawn Bradley, Evan Eschmeyer, and Tariq Abdul-Wahad to the Heat
Yep, that move trims $4.2 off Miami's payroll for 2002-03, which should get Miami OUT of luxury tax territory. In other words, Miami would save themselves a TON of money by doing this trade. Over $20 MILLION, in fact--probably around $22-$24 million.
AGAIN, if you don't understand why Miami would save so much money by doing this deal, you need to read that article in
http://www.realgm.com about the luxury tax. I posted a link to it in the "National Basketball Association" page, go to my "Wally Szczerbiak for a 2nd round pick?" post, the link to the article can be found there. So BEFORE YOU CALL ME AN IDIOT for suggesting this trade, READ THAT ARTICLE.
BY THE WAY, here's what both teams would look like after the deal goes down:
DALLAS MAVERICKS
Starting lineup
PG Steve Nash (36 minutes/game)
SG Michael Finley (36 minutes/game)
SF Dirk Nowitzki (40 minutes/game)
PF Raef LaFrentz (32 minutes/game)
C Alonzo Mourning (32 minutes/game)
Key reserves: Eduardo Najera (20 minutes/game), Wang Zhi Zhi (16 minutes/game), Laphonso Ellis (16 minutes/game), Anthony Carter (12 minutes/game)
End of the bench (no PT): Avery Johnson, Adrian Griffin
[NOTE: Shawn Kemp sure would be a nice fit on that bench; he's been spotted lately shooting hoops in the Dallas area, for what that's worth.]
MIAMI HEAT
Starting lineup
PG Nick Van Exel (40 minutes/game)
SG Eddie Jones (32 minutes/game)
SF Caron Butler (36 minutes/game)
PF Brian Grant (32 minutes/game)
C Shawn Bradley (20 minutes/game)
Key reserves: Eddie House (16 minutes/game), Vladimir Stepania (16 minutes/game), Evan Eschmeyer (16 minutes/game), Tariq Abdul-Wahad (12 minutes/game), Rasual Butler (12 minutes/game), Luke Recker (8 minutes/game)
End of the bench (no PT): ?
The Heat are obviously a pretty bad team there, folks--but are they THAT much worse than they were last year (36-46)? No, not really. And they save themselves a TON of money next year, over $20 MILLION. I'd like to see what Pat Riley can do with Shawn Bradley.
The Mavs, on the other hand, will give the Lakers and Kings a SERIOUS run for their MONEY, if Zo can play anything like his former self.
