KG may end up being the better player when all is said and done, but i don't see him ever attaining larry bird's legend status.
was it isiah thomas that said larry bird wouldn't be as famous if he wasn't white?
as racist as it is, there's probably a smidgen of truth to that.

Larry will have the bigger legend. He was definitely less doubted at every step of his career. How many country boys are legends? Plus Larry had his great college career, played in a big market with the most historic franchise, won the 3-pt contest dramatically, had commercials, etc.

it was rodman who said it, and isiah who backed him up, and no, i don't think there's any truth to it.
if there was truth to it, bird would be more famous and more highly regarded than his ultimate peer, magic. but since magic is probably even more famous, and generally held in at least as high esteem (and usually higher), no, i don't think bird gets anything that he doesn't deserve. bird's a legend because he was that good. personally, whenever i rank all-time players i rank bird and magic equal, and can really never give one the nod over the other.
so when thinking about whether garnett can surpass bird, i have to consider whether he can surpass bird and magic, because it's one in the same to me.

Why is that? Name me another player that achieved the things Bird did that isn't a legend in this sport.

NBA.com,history section?
KG will NEVER reach Larry Bird's level. Maybe Barkley's level at most.

One on one, even one on two, when the guy they call the Answer is on a one-way trip to the basket, you better just foul him. People can hate all day about the number of shot attempts. But, damn, give him props for even getting them up. He's small enough to have every shot contested. That 39% shooting sounds terrible to the regular reader, but have you seen these NBA players lately?"

Luckily I still have some old tapes from the '87 finals. Then I can see some really good basketball between the Celtics and Lakers. Magic and Bird still at their best, going at it.
You have to have lived in that era to appreciate what they brought to the game. The NBA was so far down, the finals were on tape delay
It was east vs. west, city vs. country, "Boston hard hats" vs. "Hollywood Shaker" The match up crossed so many lines. Black people had to give credit to this white guy, Whites had to respect this black guy. Everyone had to choose a side, and you had to watch that game!
