Does Adrian Dantley belong in the Hall of Fame?
Here are his credentials:
NBA Rookie of Year (1977)
All NBA 2nd Team (1981, 1984)
Comeback Player of Year (1984)
NBA All Star (1980-82, 1984-86)
23,177 career points (24.3 average)
Led league in scoring (1981,84)
Scored over 30ppg in four straight seasons (1981-84)
Never won an NBA championship.
Basketballreference has him at 130 on their HOF monitor (135 is a likely HOF'er)

Absolutely he does.
The only reason he is not in, as I understand it, is that he is allegedly a no-good sonofa***** as a human being.
Not a good enough reason, IMO. It's not the hall of nice guys.

There could be some other things working against him as well.
During his prime with the Jazz his teams were not very competitive.
24-58
28-54
25-57
30-52
45-37 (5-6)-Playoffs
41-41 (4-6)
42-40 (1-3)
Totals:
235-339 regular season
10-15 in the playoffs
And outside of scoring his career numbers are 5.7rpg and 3.0apg.

Oh my, yes.
Freakish scorer. If a guy is a three-time member of the 30 PPG/.550 FGP club (plus a 29.8/.564 season and a short 30/.580 season) and the only other member is freakin Adbul-jabbar two times, he's done some incredible things.
4 of the top 60 NBA PPG seasons ever.
He was the leading scorer for a Detroit team destined for the title and he got traded for Mark Aguirre because Thomas was friends with Aguirre.
21-5-3 in the playoffs on .521 shooting with some Jordan-esque series.

Re: Does Adrian Dantley belong in the Hall of Fame?
5th all-time in ppfga, 14th in ppg. he probably wasn't as good overall as his stats suggest (he tended to dominate the ball and stagnate an offense a bit), but he was a unique scorer and a force. probably robbed of titles due to the trade for isiah's buddy aguirre.

Of course AD belongs in the Basketball Hall of Fame
The question is less of whether Adrian Dantley should be in the Basketball Hall of Fame but the logic of the people who make the decisions on who is inducted. There seems to be no set criteria for induction (and the process itself is byzantine, to say the least) so the question is what has Dantley done NOT to be inducted.
Keep in mind that the Basketball Hall of Fame also takes into consideration a collegiate career, which makes Dantley's omission even more confusing. In addition to being one of the best players in NBA history, AD also would be considered one of the best collegiate players ever. AD also was the leading scorer on the 1976 Olympic team, so he's got the international aspect covered.

You make great points.
Dantley had great stats and was a beast for the Irish.
The only thing you can hold against Dantley is that he couldn't win. Not just couldn't win a ring but his teams were just flat out never good except if you count his days with the Pistons. He has also been on a bunch of teams but not being able to win while being the "man" is probably what is holding him back the most. Maybe that is why Bernard King isn't in either and he had a monster college career as well.
Which then brings us to this question. Would you put in guys like Marbury, Pierce, Vince, and etc. in the HOF? They didn't have as great of college careers as Dantley but I guess but they are players with great stats and little team success much like Dantley.
But yeah I think Dantley should be in. King should be in as well. I mean English got in and I don't think his teams were that much better and he didn't have the college careers like Dantley or King had. Yes his scoring feats in the NBA were equally impressive as Dantley or King but he also had the luxury of playing on the infamous Doug Moe Nuggets.

I think both King and Dantley should be in the HOF

Re: Does Adrian Dantley belong in the Hall of Fame?
Dantley, King, and Mark Aquirre are much of a piece, great scorers who provided little else. Alex English is in, they aren't far behind but may be just below the cut line.
However, he's far from the most deserving player not in the Hall. How the hell can they leave Artis Gilmore hanging?
