Which one was better and why????

And would either of them be a star in today's NBA or would they just be 2 more freakish athletes in a sea of freakish athletes????

Are you talking about Dunking ability or overall ability.

Both!

And just for the record I think Erving was the better player and Dominique was the better dunker, but neither would be extremely special in today's NBA because they both benefitted from being "pioneers" in high-flying manuevers. Back then they were special players but now everybody plays "above the rim".

I totally agree. But i would think the gap between dunking ability is smaller than the gap in playing ability. I also think today's players are much more professional then players back then, thats why more players play above the rim.

It's an interesting comparison. Both had ridiculous hangtime and athleticism, especially for their eras. I don't know that Erving was necessarily a superior "physical specimen," but I think he was probably more creative in the things he could think of to do with the ball on the offensive end.

Both were good rebounders at the SF spot (Erving's numbers are higher, but you have to factor in the fact that more shots were taken per game when he played.)

Wilkins was a bit more prolific as a scorer, although a great deal of that has to be chalked up to the difference in surrounding talent. Erving usually had a fellow All-Star or two playing next to him. Wilkins almost never did.

I would have to say that Erving did much more for his team. In particular, he was far and away a better passer and defender.

I give the overall edge to Erving, although Wilkins was a great, great player who doesn't get enough respect on this board.

The Doctor was the ****. He'd own in today's NBA easily. I just watched Game 6 of the 1976 ABA finals. He owned all n00bs.
