He was one of the most prolific scorers in college history. But I do not like his game all that much.

While he was at LSU, his father was the coach of the team. And so he allowed his son to pretty much do whatever he wanted on the court. Which is why Pistol Pete averaged 44 points a game in college. It's a feat unlikely to be repeated, but the simple fact that he seemed to get free reign over the basketball at all times on that team bothers me a bit due to the fact that the coach was his dad. College players just don't normally get to shoot 57 times in a game (his personal record) while only shooting 45%.

I have to be careful here, because I'm probably stepping on a few toes with my statements. I respect Pistol Pete a lot, and I recognize that he was an extremely good player.

But I just never got a good feeling watching Maravich play (of course, I've only seen video, rather than watching live). He seemed to always be in it for his personal glory. Even though he's known as one of the trickiest passers ever, it always struck me as overboard. Like maybe something that belonged on the globetrotters. He tended to make the flashy/risky pass when a simple one would do, and it sometimes cost his team points. It was about the show instead of winning.

I think maybe that's it. I just view Maravich as more of a showman than a competitor. It's not the only reason, obviously, but I think it's part of the reason he never enjoyed major success on the NBA level.

Irving? Are you talking about Dr. J, I assume?

No way David Robinson is overrated at all. If anything, he's underappreciated for what he did in his prime.

Sabonis isn't overrated unless you're strictly referring to his time in the NBA.
