Why is Bill Walton in the HOF?

yes I know, when he was healthy he was dominating the leagues best players, but how many healthy dominant seasons did he have? like 2? 3? I mean if this guy is voted as one of the top 50 players of all time then should a guy like Grant Hill and Penny be a lock for the HOF?

Towards the end of his career he had many productive seasons coming off the bench. but his stats dont warrant a HOF spot, and he really only had a few great seasons, I dont get it, WHY????

To be fair, neither of those other guys ever won an MVP award.

And yeah, his basketball career existed long before his couple of prime years in the NBA.

Re: Why is Bill Walton in the HOF?

The reason he is in is because of his dominance as a college player, not as a pro. If he were born now and had the same kind of career, he would be looked at like Christian Laettner was. Personal opinion of course.

Yes it was mostly for his college career.

But Christian Laettner? Walton was incredible in the NBA, even if for a short time. Laettner has never sniffed an MVP, so the analogy doesn't quite hold. But yeah, Walton was incredible in college. Imagine what could have been if his body had held up.

Re: Why is Bill Walton in the HOF?

His Blazers team did win a championship & he has an MVP to his credit. Any player w/ an MVP on their resume automatically gets in.

Well Walton played in an era where Wooden was able to stack the deck with Sam Gilbert's money. I think that can't be overlooked. Again, he is in for his college career. Laettner was never the best player in the NBA (but neither was Walton). Laettner however does lay claim to arguably being the greatest college player ever. He was fantastic as a collegian.

I think their parallels are there. Heck maybe Ralph Sampson is a better comparison for Walton and he isn't getting in the HOF.

Re: Why is Bill Walton in the HOF?

Dude. Come on. A regular season and Finals MVP leading one team to the title, and in the twilight of his career a Sixth Man award while winning the ring with another team. Sampson and Lattener's careers stack up how exactly?

Re: Why is Bill Walton in the HOF?

I still don't think he's a HOF. He was blessed to be on a terrific Celtics team. Yes his years beforehand (before the injuries) were good to great, but it was such a small sample size when he wasn't hurt. My whole point was that he got in for his college career, not his professional one.

As I said, if he played today, he wouldn't get into the HOF with his professional resume.

Re: Why is Bill Walton in the HOF?

If there is a hall of fame for people who earn millions without doing anything, Grant Hill would be in it. He is one of the top paid NBA players and plays about 10% of the game every season.
