Great centres
Okay say you have
PG: Magic
SG: Bird
SF: Jordan
PF: Barkley
C : ??????????
Who would you choose from Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Hakeem Olajuwon and Shaquille O'Neal?

Re: Great centres
Hakeem, then Shaq
Wilt and Russel are too ancient and I don't think they would have nearly the impact today as they did in the 60's

I think Bird is more of a SF than Jordan...

Re: Great centres
I think kareem is the best center ever, so i voted for him.
However, for that particular team, i would pick Russell. They could use a superb defender like him and he was a great team player.

If Bird is the SF and Barkley's at the PF spot, the Center should be a good defender. But Russell (the best defensive great center) is easily replaced by KAJ. KAJ had range (something that Wilr and Shaq lacked - mostly the second), was a goo-to-great defender, could play the passing game and wasted 2 seconds to score with his patented move. Hakeem would also fit nicely with this team, but (IMHO) KAJ was a smarter and more versatile pivot.

That's irrelevant, it doesn't take away from how great those players were. The big 3 of Wilt, Russell, and Kareem, are easily ahead of Hakeem and Shaq.

Re: Great centres
I'll go with Chamberlain. He was the most dominant of all. And because he's always compared to Russell, sometimes he's talked about as if he never won anything, but he did win two championships. Sure, Russell won eleven, but I'm sure Chamberlain would also have won eleven had he played for the Celtics.

Re: Great centres
The Celtics talent other than Russell is grossly overrated. People talk about all the HOF player but other than Cousy and Havlicek (and maybe . . . maybe Sam Jones . . . think about who your top 10 all time SG's are and question did his name come to mind?, the Celtic "greats" weren't all that great. Heinsohn was a low percentage gunner with a shaky defensive rep, KC Jones and Satch Sanders were the Bruce Bowens of their day, useful roleplayers but not worthy of the Hall of Fame. Sharman was a 6'1 pure shooter who worked on defense but had no handle and even in those days was undersized and not that quick. Frank Ramsey was a very solid reserve but is in the HOF for the Auerbach's use of him as the first sixth man, not for his great talent. Probably the best player other than Havlicek, Sam Jones and Cousy (who never won before Russell even with the same talent and "HOF" center Ed McCauley was Bailey Howell and he's the one regular starter Russell played with who ISN'T in the Hall of Fame. The reason the Celtics won was Russell (and Red Auerbach), not his supporting cast.
