Why is Maravich in the HOF?
1 winning season in his career (46w)
great numbers in college, low efficiency, little team success
wtf?

Re: Why is Maravich in the HOF?
A lot of it is based on his college career as well, which is considered one of the best all-time.
I happen to think that the freedoms he was offered by having his father as his college coach led to him being a little overrated (can you imagine anyone shooting enough to average 40ppg now?).
He had a lot of incredible skills, but I was always a little uncomfortable with how he always cared entertainment over winning.

Scoring and Publicity. Great scorers who get a lot of publicity make the HOF regardless of team success, willingness to play defense, etc. Allen Iverson is probably the most comparable player to Maravich today and I think you will find most observers consider him a sure HOF player too.

I would say it is because he was a good basketball player.

Except Adrian Dantley, inexplicably. I mean, if Pistol Pete is in, how can AD not be in?

Re: Why is Maravich in the HOF?
Iverson won during his career, in both RS and PS, he just didn't win it all. Maravich looks more like Jerry Stackhouse or Shareef Abdur Rahim, stats in losing teams.

Re: Why is Maravich in the HOF?
Among current players, Maravich most closely resembles Gilbert Arenas, statistically. Over their careers, Gil is a bit better in every area. After Gil, there are Stack, Rip, Cassell, Ray, and Parker. Then Iverson.
Iverson is a better stealer and assister, with fewer turnovers than Pete was. And a much better scorer, proportionate to the scores of the games they were in. Maravich got more turnovers (after they kept track of TO) than almost anyone who plays today.
Maravich was always famous. He had a huge contract relative to far superior players like Walt Frazier. He didn't make any team notably better. He's in the Hall due to his Fame. Lots of people still like to talk about him.

I'm not saying he didn't want to win. He just never had the chance. I don't think his dad really taught him the best way to win, even with a less-talented squad. I wouldn't hold it against him that he never won a championship. Some of the greatest players never did.
I don't think Pete ever had as much of a chance as people hoped. He was almost given too much of a greenlight and never got well adjusted to playing in a structured system. In a lot of ways, I guess I see him as a bit of an anti-Duncan, where Duncan can have an entire system built around him without him dominating the ball. Maravich, imo, just never really seemed comfortable playing without the ball. And it's really hard to win when one player dominates the ball that much.
