Re: 20 greatest players
You are more guard oriented than the OP, he favors bigs. Please don't stop posting because you didn't see people play. Just learn about them. I never saw Pettit and only saw guys like Russell at the very end of his career (watched my first game in 1969 when I was less than 10 years old). Doesn't mean I can't look at film to get a feel for style, stats for impact, and awards to get a feel for how respected players were . . . plus reading a lot.
West was a consistent NBA All-D team member, decent size, great atheticism, super court awareness. I don't consider him as good as Payton either (Frazier and Payton in my mind are the two best defensive PGs ever depending on your style preference) but he should probably be considered better than Isiah or Stockton based on the ratings of those who watched him and judged him against his peers.
I grew up in Washington and met Unseld that first year (undersized? the man looked like a walking house) and he was my favorite player. That said, Moses was on another level and a better rebounder, though Wes was a marginally better defender (size matters), a much better passer, and a much smartier player in terms of seeing the court.
And, Ewing wasn't up to Robinson's standards defensively, and less efficient offensively (though a tougher player). Robinson v. Ewing in the playoffs? Even considering DRob went further after his injury and he became a second option, he averages more rebounds, more assists, more blocks, and shoots a higher percentage from the field than Ewing in terms of playoff career. Ewing scores 2 more points a game. That's it. The image of DRob as a playoff choker comes pretty much from one series against Hakeem, a player who, unlike Ewing and Robinson, elevated his game in the playoffs rather than staying at their (HOF level) regular season levels.
