bird and magic were essentially lock-step their entire careers. by the time he had his surgery in '89, he had come in ahead of magic for mvp in 8 of their first 9 seasons, including the year before his surgery. he certainly wasn't viewed lower than magic. i can't see why now, magic is considered a level above bird by so many.
