If the answer isn't Wilt v. Russell, it's Wilt v. himself

His psyche caused him to screw up his free throws (he was supposedly a 75%+ FT shooter in practice) and do things like changing his game to copy his archnemisis Russell as a reboudning/defending/nonscorer (despite being probably the greatest scorer in history) as well as setting truly ridiculous records (averaging 48.5 minutes per game for a season!). If that isn't a one on one matchup, I don't know what it.

My take: Bird vs. Magic. Their games were amazing and they revitalized basketball. It was a pure rivalry, starting in college, and then seeped into the NBA. They might not have played the same position, but every game was big, because they could do it all. Chamberlain was all about offense (I know that Wilt was amazing at defense too, but he was more about scoring than anything else) and Russell was all about defense. While Larry and Johnson were triple double threats every night and only wanted to better each other:
