NBA Hall of Fame

Many on the time have posters on this board called for an NBA-only Hall of Fame...a chance to focus on the players who really, truly set themselves apart from their peers in the premier league. No coaches, owners, or sportswriters, no golden oldies from the pre-NBA days, no players who made their mark largely in college or in international play. And (the hardest for me) no NBA.

The NBA is too politically cautious to ever make the first move on this, so I think we should make it easy on them by having the list ready to go whenever they get around to it.

So here comes the beginning of a list, for your review, applause, rotten tomatoes, and wise refinements...

Re: NBA Hall of Fame

Based on a sliding combination of performance, longetivity, service, impact on team's success and other subjective elements, these are the retired players I would name to an NBA hall of fame (former ABA players who performed at similar levels in the NBA are evaluated equally):

Abdul-Jabbar, Kareem
Archibald, Nate
Arizin, Paul
Barkley, Charles
Barry, Rick
Baylor, Elgin
Bellamy, Walt
Bing, Dave
Bird, Larry
Chamberlain, Wilt
Cousy, Bob
Cowens, Dave
Cunningham, Billy
Dantley, Adrian
DeBusschere, Dave
Drexler, Clyde
English, Alex
Erving, Julius
Ewing, Patrick
Frazier, Walt
Gervin, George
Gilmore, Artis
Greer, Hal
Havlicek, John
Hayes, Elvin
Issel, Dan
Johnson, Magic
Jones, Sam
Jordan, Michael
King, Bernard
Lanier, Bob
Lucas, Jerry
Malone, Karl
Malone, Moses
Maravich, Pete
McAdoo, Bob
McHale, Kevin
Mikan, George
Miller, Reggie
Monroe, Earl
Olajuwon, Hakeem
Payton, Gary
Pettit, Bob
Pippen, Scottie
Reed, Willis
Robertson, Oscar
Robinson, David
Rodman, Dennis
Russell, Bill
Sharman, Bill
Schayes, Dolph
Stockton, John
Thomas, Isiah
Thurmond, Nate
Unseld, Wes
West, Jerry
Wilkens, Lenny
Wilkins, Dominique
Worthy, James

Current players who look like future members of his esteemed group (10 years experience minimum):

Bryant, Kobe
Duncan, Tim
Garnett, Kevin
Hill, Grant
Iverson, Allen
Kidd, Jason
Mourning, Alonzo
O'Neal, Shaquille

I debated Mourning vs. Dikembe Mutombo, but Mourning makes the cut because he was one of the top players in the league for several years before his kidney ailments. Mutombo was like a more defensive-oriented, less offensive-oriented of Robert Parish, IMO -- a good support player but not quite the kind of player who could carry a team, if need be.

I'm sure I have forgotten someone or to take someone off, so I have the right to edit my list. Also, unlike the current sentiment that being named a league MVP automatically makes a player a hall of famer I am NOT using that sentiment in my decision (no Bill Walton, no Steve Nash). The NFL and MLB don't use that logic; if it did, players like Rich Gannon and Juan Gonzalez will have busts in Canton and Cooperstown, respectively.

I agree with you on most of the cut list except for Parish, I defintely think he gets in because of his consistent production over the course of 20+ seasons.
