Ah, yes. That combination would have been downright sinful.

sampsons career ended early BUT the rockets had a ROOKIE center going for 21/12.
now add in Michael jordan as a rookie.

damn. not a bad place to start.
But there is no guarantee that the rockets would have won 6 championships with jordan. Its not like you could have taken jordan in 91-93 and put him on any team expect a championship

The Blazers offered Drexler and the #2 pick in 1984 for Sampson. So it could have been Olajuwon, Jordan and Drexler on the same team.

You know, I forgot about that offer. The Chicago first would have been in the cursed draft (1986) anyway. The Olajuwon/Jordan/Drexler Rockets would have overpowered everyone by the late 80s.

Re: If you had the rockets pick in 1984....

This question may have been unnecessary had Houston taken Clyde Drexler with the No. 3 overall pick instead of Rodney McCray. I felt Houston should have taken Drexler then (a raw athlete with strong upside) over McCray, who was projected as more of a decent complementary player.

Hakeem Olajuwon is one of my all-time favorite players, and people may have forgotten the reason he was chosen because he was projected to be a power forward (partly because he measured to be 6-foot-10 without shoes). When he got to Houston and showed his skills were more suited for center, then Ralph Sampson had to make the move to the power forward slot.

you dont have to have 6 championships to be successful.

i do think sampson,mj, and lucas could have beat the celtics in 85 and at least won 1 ring.

Thats right.....however someone retired that season the Rockets won their first too. Cant remember his name, but he came back and won 3 more after giving the Rockets a couple of freebies. Would have been 8 in a row had he not retired.

Re: If you had the rockets pick in 1984....

Probably not. During that initial four year run under Rudy T the Rockets were able to beat the Bulls pretty convincingly during the regular season, even when Michael was playing. The Bulls generally found it impossible to even slow Hakeem down.

I don't think this is true. He was a center in college and averaged something like 6 blocks per game. Rebounding and interior defense were his main roles coming into the league. He was their primary shotblocker and usually guarded opposing centers. Which is pretty much what makes a center a center.

It's not a matter of what you think, but what is true. Houston drafted Hakeem Olajuwon to play the power forward slot. It turned out that Olajuwon was more of a true center and Ralph Sampson's versatility (good or bad, in this case) gave Bill Fitch cause to play him more of a power forward slot, despite being 7-foot-4.
