do you understand that the faster pace you play, the more scoring opportunities you and your opponent will have? that's why ppg doesn't give you a true MEASURE of defense. it simply tells you how many points you gave up, not how well you did at stopping your opponent. giving up 100 pts on 80 trips down court is not the same as giving up 100 pts on 100 trips down court. you have 100 ppg allowed in either case, but no idea of how well you played on d. efficiency tells you that the latter team was much better defensively. it's ok to open your mind to knew things.

Except you can't take ppg between teams and compare. For example, the Suns play a very fast paced game. Them and their opponents will tend to score more points then say Houston and their opponents who plays a much slower paced game. So is Houston a better defensive team just because their opponent scores less total points (I'm just using Houstons for the pace example, not actually comparing the teams)? I would say not. You need to take the game pace into consideration which is what the efficiency stats do.
